Gslse axles in 83 rear?

It's been so long since I've done any work on a first gen rear end. And I don't really remember all the swap details. I need to know if it is even possible, and if it is, what is needed to be done if anything?

my car is a 83, and I have a set of GSL SE axles. I want to install the axles in the 83 rear to convert to 4x114.3 bolt pattern.

GSL-SE axles are a little longer because of the vented brake disks. The GSL brake disks will be pushed out and won't work with the calipers any more.

The 83 has the small spline axles and the se has the larger axles. Won’t work. You could use them in an 84-85 gsl rear end.

It's my understanding that all 1984/1985 rearend housings are big axle, even the drum ones.

^Correct, all 84/85 housings have the same spline/bearing size so the axles are all interchangeable. You would have to fab retainers, and a bracket to use disk brakes, but the axles themselves work without modification. I know because I've done this!

83 and earlier housings are small axle, and will not accept a SE axle.
