GSL-SE Rebuild Questions

Hi All,

I am about the order my rebuild kit and have a couple questions before order everything. I will be reusing the Hard seals and am ordering soft seals only. I got lucky and have good hard seals:

1. Should I replace the 6 Port sleeves due to the flaking? I was thinking of getting the Atkins banked sleeves for a slight upgrade.

2. Should I replace the Oil Control Rings for the rotors or can I reuse them (with new soft seals)?

3. Can you tell if these are OEM Mazda Seals? I know was under the impression this was an original motor so I wanted to make sure.

Try brass brushing that sleeve before you do anything. In my experience, it's unlikely to be flaking, but just carbon caked on there. I'm also unsure if the pineapple/akins sleeve replacements are an upgrade in that you're bypassing the port function.

On the oil control seals, I would install new. These are a wear item over the life of the engine and most likely cause for high oil consumption and smoking. Others will have input, too.

I am planning on running these from Atkins which still use the 6-port function, but better flow. Do these do something different than what I am thinking?

You posted pics of the wrong sides of your seals. We want to see the wear surfaces.

Yeah I didn't know if this pattern would help define if they were Mazda seals or not. I'll post more pictures tomorrow of the other sides

The height of the little triangle piece looks like it is getting short and new apex seals are advised.

Notice the width of the wear surface. New ones are very pointy. Old ones are like yours due to the 45 degree angle. Does that make sense?

Yes I can see that now. Well the motor did have 170k when I opened it up so I'm not surprised.

Thanks for taking a look!
