The previous owner of my car had left the PS Pump disconnected, they left the belt and the pulley in the storage cubby, so I thought Id try pouring to PS juice in and hooking it up to see what happens. Im a bit green so I didnt think anything was wrong until I finally tried putting the shaft on the pulley into the pump. I was wondering how I was supposed to mate it to the pump and then I realized...
I'm pretty sure the pump died so hard, the pulley ripped out the shaft with it. I'd have to open the pump up another day to see If I can fix it, but does anyone know if and where I can source parts like a new shaft for the pump?
I've got a writeup on this somewhere on the board. The input shaft for the PS pump is such that it's held in place by a C-clip like ring which gets worn down over time. Flipping the ring helps to reset the critical bearing distance, but if its worn too badly, it disintegrates into the pump, allowing the shaft to be pulled straight out the front - as in your casr. The pumps are NLA to my knowledge and didn't provide that much boost pressure anyway. The internal design is a vane and rotor mechanism that moves very little flow, but adequate for the recirculating ball mechanism of our steering.
The pump could be rebuilt by an enterprising person with some tools and know-how. Search on my username and Power Steering Pump, and see what you can find.

I wonder if you could retrofit a more common pump in? Rockauto doesnt show RX7 PSPs in stock, but there are pumps for other model Mazdas. They dont look like exact bolt ons though

the basic pump was probably used on something else, but i would expect to have to swap brackets/pullies etc
