megasquirt is nice and you can eliminate a lot of unnecessary emissions parts...but why for more power? the SE engine runs like a top with all of that stuff.

not for more power for tune ability and to streamline the engine compartment.

Please post pics of your rotary VW project! I'm thinking about doing something similar.

This is what I would do (considering it is going into a bug):

Start off with a Weber 48 IDA with the correct manifold. This will simplify things greatly.

During this time, you can build/test/experiment with your Megasquirt.

When you go to EFI, get yourself an IDA throttle body (2 or 4 injectors), install your sensors, install EFI pump. Once that system is working well, then sell the Weber carb.

The MS will probably take more time to build/test/tune than you expect. The carb will let you enjoy the car while working out the details on the EFI and will give you a pretty easy transition to EFI (throttlebody matches the carb pattern). Even a simplified SE engine with the stock intake, etc. will be kind of bulky (UIM, LIM, air duct, etc.).

That's what I would do. If it was going into an RX-7, I might be more inclined to use the stock EFI and then go to Megasquirt down the road. I think the IDA style TB will be better for your application.

i will be documenting this project well. i will hopefully get a car this weekend and start plumbing the coolant lines and start prepping for a roll cage.

gsl-se addict, i think you got the right idea but i want to stick with the stock FI from what i understand all the components will work fine if i have a computer (ie megasquirt) to run them plus i heard the engine run well on the car before i bought the engine. im in no rush to finish so im not going to carb it just to get iit on the road. appreciate the support . might have some gsl-se FI parts up for sale soon.

One point Addict was trying to make is sheer size of the stock SE intake system. Not sure how well it it will fit in a Bug. I'm not sure if there is a sidedraft version of the FI TBs, if there is, then you can keep the stock LIM and working AUX ports for peak performance. That, however, will most likely take up as much room as the stock setup.

Yup, there is. Sam (dj55b) is running sidedraft TBs with megasquirt.

Scott is correct. I was talking about the bulk of the stock setup. The MS will only allow you to drop the AFM and a couple solenoids, so it really is not going to be much simplier than the stock setup. An aftermarket TB setup will take up far less space.

Edit: Here's Sam's setup.

I was thinking Sam was running a side draft setup, couldn't remember. Here's a link to a couple of his engine pics.

should have plenty of room. will probably suse decklid standoffs to free up more space and allow the engine compartment to breather more. if i need more room i got a grinder and a BFH
