gsl chatter

the rear end in my GSL is starting to chatter on really slow turns. Is there a cheaper alternative to royal purple and redline? Royal purple is $19.00 a quart and im not buying that, redline I have to order. Is mobile one or valvoline ok? I just refuse to pay $40.00 to do a diff oil change in this car. Not gonna happen. And i know to use the GM LSD additive as well, thank you.

You get what you pay for. Your quibbling about $40.00 to change the diff oil? Thats a
small percentage of the cost to overhaul it or change out the bearings on the axles.
This isn't a Geo Metro, its an actual sports car and may cost a bit more to maintain.

i understand that. i just dont see how much different there can be in $18.99 gear oil that synthetic and 75w-90w or gear oil thats $8.99 thats synthetic and 75w-90w, especially if I use the GM LSD crap. How much difference can there be?

Just bustin' your chops.

Look at this way, if you try the cheap stuff and it works, you win

If it doesn't work nows its going to cost you even more to use a better oil.

Do you feel lucky today ?

now i'm no diff expert but i'm guessing the clutch pack is probably starting to show signs of wear since u can notice the chatter at slow speeds. now my opinion on gear oils, i think most of the time ur paying for the name. i've never used the higher priced stuff or even synthetics and have had no problems what so ever. of course mine isn't lsd nor have i experienced ur problem. and chances r, if this IS a sign of wear, the problem will still exist regardless which u use.

I've got one word for you: Lucas

Everything they make works exactly as advertised, and they don't seem to think that their **** is golden either, so prices are very reasonable...

funny you say that, i just got off the phone with lucas! Lucas it is for me, their synthetic is still more than Redline but i dont have to wait or pay shipping. I also wanted to ask specifically you.. I read somewhere that you use lucas gear oil in your tranny. Do you use the synthetic 75w90? I know you run 50/50 atf too, what atf do you use?

First off, I'm not running synthetics. I'm not a real believer in them, except for my bi-turbo Audi because I'm told I have to use it by experienced Audi forum members.

So, for the tranny I run the Lucas gear oil, and Lucas ATF.

Lucas gear lube for the rear, and I added the limited slip stuff just to be safe (probably didn't need it, but why not).

I use the valvoline 90w, and ford lsd additive in both old worn rears, and over-shimmed rebuilt rears with great success.

i changed my gear oil last night, the old stuff looked kinda new, but im sure it was the cheapest the mechanic could get. I used synthetic lucacas 75w-90 gear oil for LSD diffs. The chatter is still there a bit, but its far far less that it was. Im getting a tube of GM LSD stuff saturday all ill toss that in there too.

Just wondering, how do you guys fill your diffs? I popped that rubber gromet from under the spare tire and ran a hose down right into it. took about 2 min to fill
