The Great Water Pump Gasket Debacle - Part 3

Ok, so I had water pump gasket difficulties when I replaced my water pump: (see links)

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...er+pump+gasket

Having to purchase two gaskets three times for one stinkin' water pump got expensive! But I wanted to do it right. The fourth and last time, I finally checked the gasket surfaces of the cover and housing for flatness, something I should have done the first time. Well, they appeared flat

I decided to use a different gasket compound this time around, so instead of Three-bond 1104, (same as Yamabond and maybe Hondabond?) I used Permatex silicone gasket maker for water pumps and thermostats. I was hesitant because it looked like the product was made to replace the gasket rather than help seal it. I didn't want to goop too much on 'cause I didn't want clogged passages, and I was able to spread it pretty thin.

I applied it to one side of each gasket, stuck it to the cover or housing, then to the other side of the gasket and snugged down the bolts lightly and evenly. After about 10 minutes, I torqued the nuts and bolts in the recommended pattern in 3 or 4 steps, and filled the system with coolant the next morning. A month later and voila, still no leaks or gasket creep!

This leads me to think the Three-bond could have been causing the problem, as it was difficult to spread really thin, (highly viscous) didn't set-up well, and maybe the solvents softened up the gasket so much it could stretch and ooze out.

Anyway, I don't know if anyone else has had problems like this but I hope this can help someone.
