Got a problem...

I have a 81 12A and it has been giving some problems lately. It will make a whine sort of like a deep whistle and the RPMS will drop drastically. Usually so low the "idiot" lights will come on like it has choked down. I can tap the gas about 3 - 4 times and it will idle normal with no sounds, tap the gas a few more times and it will start dropping in RPMs again. It will keep doing this. I thought it was an air leak causing the problems (thats what it sounded like), but I cant find any leaks anywhere.

Anybody have any idea what could be causing this? This may be a normal problem for you guys, im just not real familiar with rotarys. Alot of people tell me to junk it, or put a V8 in it. I like it too much to even think of junking it, and I dont want to stick a V8 in it. I plan on repainting it, but would like to get this problem fixed first.

Any advice will be appreciated.

I posted this on nopistons.com but this forums seems to be a little more "alive" and is posted on more often.

Mazdatrix has this on their website about the shutter valve:
"The valve is attached to the intake manifold on the engine side, at the rear, under the carb, with a medium hose going to the air filter, and a small hose going to the metal vac hose rail, and is part of the smog equipment. It is a very common problem that can drive you, or unknowing mechanics nuts. The symptom is a weird "honking" noise at idle, or as the engine is returning to idle. When they are really bad, the idle is very rough. The carb has to be removed, or at least unbolted, and lifted up a few inches, to get to it. If the shaft it hooks to is badly worn, it should also be replaced, but the manifold has to be removed to do it."

Here's the link. This is somewhat common as I've replaced a couple in my years with my 12A:
