clutch question

since its getting warmer im gonna have my gsl out soon. when i put it away for the winter i had a clutch problem... when i pressed it down all the way it barely caught , thus i could carely shift gears.. its kinda like its just not catching... throughout the last few months i had it running i had to press the clutch further and further down to let it work and catch on.. now theres no room left and when i press the clutch all the way it doesnt work!

is there like a cable on these things that just needs tightening? i have limited knowledge on clutches so please keep that in mind

help!

Check the fluid in your clutch master cylinder, if its still all there, you may need a new master cylinder, and if you replace the master, you need to replace the slave. I just had the exact same problem and this is what I did. You can get the parts at mazdatrix.com for a fairly decent price.

You don't always need to replace the master and slave together. sure you can but it's not a law of thermodynamics or anything

Yeah but its a good idea to since a strong master can kill a weak slave pretty fast. Or at least thats what Aaron cake told me

It's more the fact that if one cylinder is pitted and corroded then there's a good chance the other one is also.

And the bits and pieces of junk from a rotting seal is abrasive to the other good seal and will eat it up, so you hardly ever see one bad and the other perfectly OK...

i just got the slave cylinder replaced.. also what does it mean when you switch gears and the RPM's seem to stick for a bit before coming down when the clutch is in.. actually it tends to go up for a second when the clutch is first engaged

I can verify that. I had a problem where the pressure would slowly release as I held the pressure down. replaced the slave 'cause it was easier (lazyass), now it's slowly starting again because I didn't replace both.

I agree with going through and checking/replacing the master & slave cylinders. If, once you have bled these well, then it still doesn't work, then you will want to go searching for a good clutch kit. I just recently bought my '85 GS and had to have a Beck/Arnley clutch kit installed. I got a good deal on it at NAPA ($175.00), and it has worked great. At that time I was fearful of ******* with fixing a clutch problem, so I ended up spending $507.00 on labor to put it in.

How bad did that suck? The car itself only cost me $375.00.

Since then, there has been pretty much nothing that I have decided that I can't do myself.

Hope it gets resolved for you.

OMFG!!! $507??? JEEZUS CHRIST!!!

You coulda got 4 jack stands with a creeper, a buddy with nothing to do, and a whole $hitload of tools to replace that clutch for WAY less than $507.. and if you did F up ( I don't see how you could)... take that $375 as a learning experience... hehehe.. Ohh well that sucks.. end of story..
