got it for free!!!

My dads friend gave me and 85' gsl-se for free. The apex seals in it are bad. With it he gave me another 86' rx-7 with a 13b in it. So i pulled the motor in the 85' and i have to replace the seals. I was wondering if I could use the motor from the 86 but switch the front housings. Another question i have is if i have to hook all the emissions solenoids and sensors back up because i don't want to have to deal with all the electronics and crap. I just wanna put it in and go. Would it run better without those solenoids? And will i have any trouble if i leave all the sensors off?

you're gonna have trouble if you start eliminating sensors, but you can get rid of some of those solenoids. First lets back up a bit, are you planning on using the fuel injection off of the 86 or 85? I'm assuming you just want to swap motors and not all the manifolds.

If the motor in the 86 is good, why not just drive that?

Good question.

Save yourself alot of hassle and just repair the apex seels in the '85. If there isn't anything else wrong with it, it should run great.

the 86 was in an accident and the whole front end was crunched in, and i dont plan on using the fuel injection because that would be a lot of work to switch it over when i allready have the lines for the carbuerator there and i can just hook that back up. Why cant i just leave all the sensors off and have it all mechanical?

the 85 has been sitting for about 10 years not running so i kinda just wanna switch the motors because i know the the other one runs good. I dont really have much money to spend fixing the old motor because this is my first car and i gotta pay for insurance which is gonna be a pain. I figured since the 85 is historic this year and doesnt have to pass emissions i can take off all those solenoids but i dont really know too much about the sensors.

The '85 is 1st gen. it wouldn't be fi. unless they did it on some and not others. but thats what i was told when looking for a new carb. "Just go to a junk yard and find a carburetor on anything between '79 and '85."

The 85 is not historic (gotta be 25 years old) so you will have to go to emissions. I have one and thought the same thing.

GSL-SE's were all fuel injected from factory. Hey, if you want to give up on the GSL-SE, let me know, I am looking for a turbo project.

1st gens were all carbureted...EXCEPT for the GSL-SE's. You either have a lower model that has been rebadged, or a GSL-SE that has been carbureted.

i thought 20 years made a car historic, whats the deal. And what should i do as far as these stupid solenods and sensors i hate them and want to just eliminate them because they are the biggest pain to hook up
