Im not looking for quality I just need an inexpensive way to get the car to pass emmisions. afterwards I will just put the racing exhaust back on.

It might work, but it probably wouldn't last very long. The heat of the rotary destroys almost all non rotary specific exhaust components!

when i bought my 7 it was missing the rear cat and the downpipe. what i did was cut the front flange off the front cat and unbolt the flange for the down pipe that was still connected to the muffler flnage. i picked up one of those Maremont/Arvin universal cats and had a shop weld a tail pipe adapter to the flanges then had a downpipe bent to fit. It works and past inspection in new york state. however, the amount of money I taught I was saving was negated by the amount of time I spent laying under the car and futzing with the thing and running back and forth to the parts store trying to find the right size tailpipe adapters to make the connections. Hopefully it will last 2 more summers as nys only requires cats on cars 25 yrs old and newer. njw

Ok I did some calling around. I called 2 places, one I trust and one I don't know anything about. The one I trust is MAC Autosport here in colorado, they stated you only need one cat to pass. They do lots of custome race work as well as motor swaps and I know they come across this often. I sort of figured this after 2 hours of searching CO emission laws, and saw nothing about stock equipment being required just a cat, pcv and all under hood goodies. Now when I called a "authorized" emission repair center the rep told me that they would have to look at the car to see what is available. I asked if I had to have the full 3 cat assembley and she couldnt give me a straight answer. So from what I understand is in colorado, you just need to have the required equipment, not stock equipment.

You may want to look into the Bonez cat. It is a single cat that replaces the stock 2 or 3 cats. It is a direct bolt-in being made for the 7. They run about $245.

The number of cats you have depends on the year. I believe 81-83 have 2 and 84-85 have 3. The 79/80 have a thermal reactor system instead of a catalytic converter.

If you what to just get through inspection, maybe you can borrow some cats off of someone that has removed theirs or just have a single universal cat and pipe put in to replace the cats.

So this bonez kit hooks up tot the manifold and replaces all cats before the cat-back muffler hookup? if so thats a heck of alot cheaper than the aftermarket kit mazda has.
