Talking ghetto muffler packing!

well i've been waiting for a resonator i ordered off ebay for quite some time now and driving the RX with headers, straight pipes and a straight through magnaflow is far too loud, damn car is giving me headaches whenever i drive it. so i figured i'd go totally ghetto if only for a few days til my resonator gets here.

what i came up with was steal wool, a crapload of mechanics wire cut and bent around the tail pipe with a piece of exhaust wrap and a gear clamp. lol

to my suprise at idle this made the car almost sound normal and was still flowing exhaust out no problem.

now for the test drive. i managed to get about 2 minutes into my drive and the car was sounding great with a very low tone.

i then decided to floor it.. bad idea. my entire ghetto contraption went flying off the back of the car in a smoldering blaze, bending the mechanics wire like it was string.

came back, put two gear clamps on, ditched the exhaust wrap and tried again, this time it lasted through a few full throttle runs, but a backfire "pop" sent the entire thing flying off again.

i put it back on (yet again) with even more mechanics wire and clamped it down harder, so far its holding up, but i doubt for long.

to sum it all up, i need my freakin' resonator! or perhaps a different muffler... although this was one helluva funny experiment.

ya i hear ya, i have that god-aweful raspy sound too, the resonator i got was similar to this one

i think even with the resonator im going to put the straight through magnaflow up front, then resonator then find a offset muffler for the rear. that should work out to be pretty quiet and still flow nicely.

something like it!

i remember my YAMAHA 65O needed an exhaust so I DID THE SAME THING!..only I drilled a ton of holes into a tin can, stuffed steel wool into it and shoved it into the tailpipe! ..it worked pretty good too! The only thing i was worried about was it getting sucked back into the engine! I didn't care if it fell out after -all it sounded (it that a word?) better ..kinda like a Harley!.so if you think things are impossible..I think i CAN!!!.haha pun, pun!!!out a here!!

Not sure if you got the RB presilencer, or a real resonator on the way, but that 's what I have with a N1 straight through, and wow is it loud. I have no tingy sound but it's louder than anything else on the road.. Been wanting to get a muffler that's not straight through to quiet it down..

some of them have screws,or you can weld them in place,or youcan place it just before a bend in the tubing.

you guys need to get a big body muffler.... i.e. HKS superdragger, Greddy huge round style, etc... they help bellow the tones down but still flow plenty. or hell, do what i'm gonna do and get the Racing Beat muffler for the FD's. 3" quietness

^^ ya i have a larger magnaflow on my supra, 3" mandrel bends all the way from the turbo back, no cats, no nothing and its so quiet in comparison.

since the RX is my daily driver i want to keep it as quiet as possible, i think im going to need to go to a offset muffler to do so. we'll see how it goes with my resonator, but im sure i'll need more...

open header to open header a rotary is far louder than its piston counterparts from what ive experienced.

well it would only be on a track, but if it is like really really loud they won't let us through the pit checking.

yes it is. its mostly due to the rotaries combustion chamber. its doesnt burn fuel as quickly as a piston engine and therefore is still burning way after it gets to the exhaust manifold. this is also the reason rotaries exhaust runs hotter than most.
and the turbo on your supra helps quiten it down also

Try stainless steel wool instead of regular. It doesn't burn...

no more ghetto for me. put on a ebay resonator today and replaced the over the wheel part of the catback since it was leaking a bit. car sounds quieter.... major improvement over before but its still too much noise for me. i think i may try one of those inserts from summit

funny, i first tried to swap a offset pro-flow muffler on it and it was actually louder than the straight through magnaflow!

I just paid $200 Dollars for my pipe to be welded from my rb header to muffler. I can't afford it to change it. Not until I port it at least.

you can always toss in a resonator easy enough, just find a straight section and use a cutting arbor + adapter (like $10 from home depot) in a drill. then get a couple exhaust clamps and voila!

yup, or you could put in another muffler or a glasspack. that god-aweful tingy sound is what i wanted to be rid of and so far, so good.

best fix for this and to keep it quiet would be a RB pre-silencer, altho you can also just pickup and brand of presilencer from a auto parts store and use that. much better than a resonator but works much in the same way.

trouble with our exhausts as stated earlier is the damn heat, so RB may be the best way to go if you are willing to shell out the cash. i personally like to do things my own way and see how they work out.

Wow your wrong in so many ways. Rotaries are louder because they make more exhaust per revolution than a pissed on engine bacuse it displaces the full capasity of the enigne in one revolution. Were a pissedon takes two cycles to displace its capasity. And they run otter because on a pissed on the intake stroke helps cool the cumbustion chamber that just went through a power and exhaust cycle. Where as in a rotory the exhaust stroke is allways secluded to it's own part of the engine causing one hell of a hot spot. There's no intake stroke comming right after the exhaust stroke to cool the area. everrun a rotory with out any header or exhaust manifold on? I have and it's not still cumbusting in the manifold.
