getting a title
ok, anybody here who has any experiance with titles, please chime in. heres the story. i bought the car 2 weeks ago, the guy i bought it from bought it from a guy who lived in georgia (i live in alabama, so does he) and the guy in georgia bought it from a woman who also lived in georgia. the woman in georgia was the last person to have the car registered with a title. so im the 3rd owner to not have a title on this car. so how the hell would you think id go about getting a title on this car? i know its different for each state, but any info to get me started would be nice. i already ran a police report and it came up clean, not stolen. so what do i do next?

get it to a qualified mechanic and have a inspection done, just tell them you need a safety inspection to get a title. hopefully it wont need too much work to get a title, but atleast here thats how she goes.

just call the DMV, they can tell u what u'll need to do. all states r different, u may have to send a registered letter with return receipt to that woman for her to get a copy, signing it straight to u. if she has moved since then, it will come back to u, unopened and all u'll have to do then is to apply for lost title. i had to do this once. good luck.

Call and tell them you have a GA non title car and ask for the procedure to get a title.
this is what I had to do in NC with a Ga car.

If I had 3 years worth of registrations from GA then NC would have issued a title with out any thing else being required.

alabama doesn't have vehicle inspection numb nuts!
Title, insurance and a license, any license are required. They have centers in grocery stores, whole process took less than 30 minutes, that included waiting in line. The month that titles come up for renewal are based on the year of vehicle. And they only accept checks from a local bank.
And always be nice to the beauracrat behind the window, or they will make your life hell. "Nice blouse............ love those earings........ is that you son......nice wedding ring?"

I'll weigh in more later on this thread. It's kind of late and I'm tired right now. There are two ways to do it. One is easy. The other is a pain in the a__. One is legal. The other works. I have experience with both methods, and my suggestion is that you get another, similar car that is junk but has a good title. Or else get a title only (and VIN plate if you can) on eBay, or somewhere else. Then you register your car as one that it isn't. Although I have succeeded in getting a title using the legal method in Minnesota, I won't ever bother with that method again. More details to come later.

i've *heard* there is a state in the northeast, like vermont or maine, somewhere in new england i believe, that you can get a title with little to no paper work. you'll have to look it up. but have them mail it to you and you can register the car in your state

I don't think that they will title you as owner of that car, if you just have the vin#. not sure how much trouble will create if a lot of people do that. Vin# is everywhere online.
thanx

As everyone has already said, Have the person you got the car from write you a Bill of Sale. I don't know about Alabama but I live in Georgia and can tell you what happens here. In Georgia, when you go to the Tag Office to plate the car all you need is a bill of sale. Georgia doesn't require a title, BUT you can request a title when you register the car in your name. I think it costs about $10 or $15 and takes about 2 to 6 weeks to recieve the new title. You do have to have a bill of sale to take to the Tag Office and it will need to be notarized.(By a public notary)

are you saying that if I make a bill of sale with you for a car doesn't belong to you(John owns that), I can have John's car title under me, even though that I don't have the car at all?( assuming I am dump enough to pay you without seeing the car, only got the VIN#)
when we notary the bill of sale, the peoson only checks the ID, not the car, not even the title. so, it will be a mess with the hole in the auto law.

For an '83 it would probably be $200 (I doubt it's counted as a "sports car," though I haven't checked). You get a title, bill of sale, and all the paperwork you need to license the vehicle in your state.
In Washington, to title a vehicle that has been reported as "totalled," as the one that I'll be getting was, you have to pass an inspection. That would have been problematic for me since the car is nowhere near stock. So that's why I'm using this service.
I don't know what Alabama's laws are like, but if the car is stock and you have all the proper paperwork minus the title and it hasn't been wrecked, you can probably get a title from your DMV without a need for a title service. But as a last resort, you can always get one from that website.

Yes. You transfer ownership of the vehicle to them, they get a brand new title for it in their company name (I assume using some sort of fleet registration, not positive on how those laws work in Nevada) and transfer it back to you. You just have to sign a form essentially saying "I certify that I did not steal this vehicle."
If it were simply an issue of having a salvage title versus a clean title, I wouldn't be using this service at all, since the car has practically no resale value anyway. I'm just using it because there's no way in heck that a car with an engine swap (among other things) is going to pass an inspection, at least in Washington. Not to mention that I don't have all the receipts and such for the aftermarket parts.
