You don't need a title, you just write them a bill of sale. Yes, it has potential for abuse, which is why they have you sign a affidavit saying you have full legal ownership of the car. So if there is a problem, they can put the blame on you.

And no, I don't know the specifics of how it works, but it's the easiest and safest option for me, so I'm gonna try it. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I don't know about other states, but in North Carolina the owner(s) has to sign the title and have it notarized. The buyer can then have the DMV transfer the title into their name, or they can sell the car and pass the original title (signed/notarized) to the next buyer. I bought my 7 off eBay and the seller had bought the car to re-sell but the title wasn't signed/notarized. Took me a couple of weeks to get the original owners to sign it.
