Getting into the Rx-7 Revolution

Hey Guys...I've been a honda man all my life....I was getting interested in the rx-7 and decided to try my hand at them.... I've got one rx-7....a 1987 Mazda Rx-7 and i'm looking at getting a parts car for it....just wondering if I could use a 1987 mazda as a parts car for a 1985....are these mechanical parts interchangeable?? thanks!

Smaxted,

It'll be the best decision you'll ever make, however, if you rice it out the bulk of the RX7 Club will hunt you down...and kill you...I'm not kidding...they will!

I believe a lot of the stuff from the S4 (correct me if I'm wrong) is better than on the S3 FI (i.e. 13B Engine or FI).

The 85 can't be carbed in order for the parts to swap in right and even then modification is required.

don't forget that an 85 and 87 are completely different generations. The motor and tranny are for the most part, the only things you can use. There will be a few things here and there, but not much stuff. 2nd gens have IDRS, 1st gens have a live axle. Suspension is completely different, etc.....

supposidly it's a crank angle sensor... looks like a spedometer gear that sits in the tranny bell housing of a 1989 Honda accord

You do know that our cars are rotary powered right? I'm not that advanced in the rotary field but I'm pretty sure we don't have a crank angle sensor...

Surely the crank angle sensor was the name of a component of the EFI system which indicated the relative position of the shaft.

If you are going to put the 87 motor into the 85 you will not need the "crank angle sensor", unless you are going to use the efi.
The engine is the only usefull part for an 85 or earlier.
Read the Faq thread, you'll like it.

Actually I scraped the 85 idea... I bought a 86 and 87... the 86 standard needing a clutch and exhaust and dents banged out...has around 10 k on the motor...but needs a tune - up...the second one I bought is a 87 beautiful body...needs a centre console and does not start...it's auto...it's fuel related I believe...it starts if you inject fuel into it...and the injectors all spray..
