gearing: sa vs se

thinking of swapping my sa tranny with the se tranny. guys in the know, which is closer ratio? i know that with the se i'll be able to get a short shifter. but i would rather fab one if that is the only gain.

It's all here.

20:55 Rear Net Tire RPM @ -Countershaft & Mainshaft Gear Teeth--
Vehicle Year 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Axle Final Tire Size RPM 60 MPH C1 C2 C3 C4 C5 M1 M2 M3 M4 M5
RX-7 79-83 3.674 2.218 1.433 1.000 0.825 3.909 3.227 185/70-13 892 2878 13 20 25 29 31 28 26 21 17 15
RX-7 85-SE 3.622 2.186 1.419 1.000 0.715 4.077 2.914 205/60-14 851 2480 13 20 32 37 40 28 26 27 22 17

The Spacing is all fudged up. See the Text file attached.
The SE Does have more aggressive gearing than a 79 5 speed.

Jeremy - yeah, it looks like the 1-4 ratios would be SLIGHTLY closer (but also lower), but 5th is significantly lower. Also keep in mind an SE tranny won't just bolt into an SA car. Parts can supposedly be swapped from a late '80 tranny to make the SE tranny fit, but if it's a '79 tranny, I'm not even sure if it's possible without serious cutting. See Felix Miata's page for more info:

The SA transmission has stronger teeth in my opinion... notice the tooth counts are all lower on the SA tranny. That means the teeth are larger and stronger.
