gast tank replacement

doing a complete rebuild on my 85 se and i would like to replace the gas tank. It has a dent in the botton. looks like the previous owner backed into something. There's nothing wrong with it but it had to be dropped along with the entire rear end in order to clean and put in new undercoat. Since it's out i might as well replace it. Anybody successfully put in a fuel cell or does anybody know where i can get a replacement tank? Better than stock......

they're not the most abundant in supply, and chances are if they are they've been sitting.......and rusting. if the dent it dentrimental then by all means replace it but you might be better off doing a POR sealing or having the pros do it.

I spoke to my local gas tank guy and he said since they're so dam hard to find he would suggest having a leaking tank lined. Bout $150.00 to $200.00.

Call around to the radiator shops, or check the Yellow Pages for someone that refurbishes automotive fuel tanks. Drop your's and let them see if it's worth fixing. You will probably save in the long run over a used one and not get raped for the price of a new one.

I talked to the local guy here that does gas tanks, and he quoted me 132 dollars to have it redone. Thats if I dropped it myself, and it doesnt have a baffle.

Sadly your SE will have a baffles so it might be a lil more.

They are both baffled, the SE tank has an added sump cup.

Dont line your tank. I talked with someone who has done it for years, charged $180. He had one come back from flaking. He contacted the manufacturer and they said the proper way to line is to cut in half, sand blast line a few coats, then weld back up? He quit doing them. I installed a geo metro tank for about $100. $40 tank, $50 filler neck hose (nappa), had fuel lines and clamps. Done deal.

Are you sure?

I thought Non-FI tanks werent baffled.

EDIT: I have since found out that I have a 84-85 tank. I filled up and put in 15+ gallons, so I called my pops and he said that along time ago, he had leaks in the tank and it was just cheaper to get it replaced. My guess is that it was replaced with a larger tank.

So I guess the only way I am going to find out is to drop the beast and look inside to see. Kinda sucks when its your DD
