Gas smell
Gas smell
I smell gas. It used to be an unburned fuel smell but now its stronger and smells more like fuel vapor, like at a fas station. I dont want to catch on fire. It doesnt seem to smell under the hood as much as it doe IN the car kinda sorta in the rear near the GAS TANK. I dont see any leaks (but gas evaporates fast!). i did a search and read about a pulsation dampener. I have an 85 GS with a 12a carb'd motor. Any ideas would be great. Shes my daily driver and dont want to catch on fire.
It's leak'n somewhere. I had a strong gas smell and it turned out to be a leaky fuel line connection. And you're right.... they're hard to find because it evaporates so quickly. Since you just had your carb rebuilt, I'd start by checking the connections in the engine compartment first. Did you replace the fuel lines when you re-installed the carb? Good luck!

I prob shouldnt worry too much if its by the rear of the car.......there isnt any spark or heat back there.

I know on my car the gas cap is old and doesn't "seal" like it should. After I top it off, and make an hard right turn, I smell it for awhile. It may be as simple as you didn't put the cap on properly the last time you fueled up.
ah yes the gas cap, good catch Tmann26.
You might want to pull the plastic wheel well panel out from behind the left rear wheel. Behind this panel is where the fuel level sensor is. Although I've never heard of this happening to anyone else, on a full-ish tank this could be a likely spot for a leak.

Yes also, is it all the time or only after a fill up. If the tank has a pinhole on top (from like rust) it can get fumes into the cabin. Oh and carb'ed cars dont have a pulsation dampener.
