Peejay is right. I read that in a book back in the first gas crunch. Use the momentum of gravity to accelerate the car downhill for you, and dont lead foot it uphill where the extra engine load eats fuel. I like to accelerate a bit just before the hill and coast to the top. Of course here in central Florida thats a tactic not often used.

I've got a '79, wasn't the carb tuned to run richer than the later FB model 1st gens? Could I see an improvement in MPG by using a carb from an '81 and up RX-7?

Perhaps, I think SA's were jetted slightly richer from the factory to help keep the burn going in the thermal reactor.

That is correct.

As for gas-saving, try going with taller/skinnier tires. Something like a 175/80/13 should get you about a 5-7% increase.

I'm driving my Fiesta a lot more lately, 35 mpg on the highway.

Ya know you all should feel lucky. I have pay 150 insurance, 55 cell phone, 27 storage, 20 dollars a week for gas and I only make roughly 200 a week. Lets see thats 150....205.....232.......432.......and I don't have any cash at the end. If I run low on gas it's hiching a ride from the g\f with my old civic. Ok. Count your blessings. Drive less often ok guys I'm learning. I'm actually learning to hate driving. I find taking my extra cash I have at the end of whenever I have any and filling up the tank for 1 ok only 1 day of joyful driving. I drove to Carl's house and got pretty good gas mileage. Lets see it was about 45 and 45 on the way back give or take 2 or three gallons when accelerating on and off the ramps.....I got about 10 mpg. I hate the prices but I'm paying an arm, leg, and my left nut for gas ok. A lot here complain cause they have only 20 bucks at the end of the week. FEEL LUCKY.
And the saving on gas thing, well I can't tell you cause I have yet to find away. But keep up the support. And if you find any good ways to help on saving gas with a SP and all te goodies please let me know. I have no cash. so it can't be having ANYTHING to do with money.

You really have no clue.

Gasoline is only part of what we use crude oil for. What do you drive on? Asphalt. Where does asphalt come from? Crude oil. What are you typing on? Keyboard. What is keyboard made from? Plastic. What is plastic made from? Crude oil. What are you wearing? Synthetic fibers. What are synthetic fibers? Plastic. What is plastic made from?

Get the picture?

Ok...back to topic.... I tend to drive my 7 pretty softly during the week and only open her up on the weekend.... I shift normally at 3k..... what I was thinking is, would it be better to shift at like 3500 - 5000?? what I'm getting at is, is it better to let the power band wind up a bit before the change and not let the engine labour down in the low revs or is that just crazy since the 2nd jets open up around 4500 - 5500?

Also, how about staying in 4th gear @ 60km/h (speed limit) and doing 2000rpm or shifting to 5th and maybe doing 1800rpm?

Thoughts?

I don't go over 4th gear until I'm going about 110km/h.

In the city you don't want to lug the engine so 5th gear is right out, on the highway the engine is more efficient at 4000rpm than it is at 3500rpm and you're lugging it at only 3000rpm.

I just had an idea :

Maybe try to keep the accesories that are on,to a min ?
You know,if you have to listen to the stereo, and you have amps in.Maybe keep the volume lower than otherwise,it will place a little less load on the alternator.

Might just give 0.1 mpg beter, but it helps ?

I think the gas is getting worse. I've been driving this 83GS since I bought it in 82, and my mileage has dropped from 22 to 16. Same driving style, generally smooth, with a light accelerator and brake foot.
