gas gauge not working right help

what is the peice in gas tank called that measures the fuel levels so i can purchase one?

My buddy's gas guage wasnt workign right, and he took out his guage cluster and cleaned teh back (the circuit board) and then it started working fine!!!!

on the drivers side back wheel take off the plastic cover next ot the gas tank, you will see the sender units plugin
unplug it and clean the contacts, its the prob 90% of the time
