Im "Dizzy" with timing trouble

Ok.....So...first off I canot leave well enough alone. and im "retarded" (ha)
but, i got my timing light workin the other day and checked the timing, and at full retard (on th little slot) the engine was at T.D.C.( and it sounded better than it has ever, it wasnt missing or anything) so I hesitantly turn the engine off, pull the dizzy and reset it. now it wont start, and when it does it wont idle and sounds like only one rotor is goin (or a weed wacker, not in the good way). Im just wondering if anyone has encountered sumthin like this before. my best gues is that i killed the plugs with the dizzy set way out when i tryed to start it the first couple times.

any input on my problem would be apreciated, If no one gives me a better idea im gettin new plugs (again, 4th set since i bought the car) and gunna try them.

P.S. its a S3 electric dizzy, and S3 engine ( it hink)
thanks

Dustin

Do you have a haynes manual? It sounds like you have your dizzy inserted really off. The Haynes manual will tell you have to install it if you didn't mark it first.

Did you turn the motor to TDC before pulling the dizzy? If you didnt, turn the crank pulley until the leading mark on the pulley aligns with the pointer then pull the dizzy off and check to see if you have it set corectly.

we just rebuilt our engine and it wouldnt start for anything we finally roleld it down a hill and it started. after about 5-10 min of running the egts were around 1500 at 2k rpm, would not rev past 6, and the headers were cherry red. my best conclusion is that our ignition is way retarded.

This problem goes WAY back in auto history. It's easy to get the dist unsynched when you remove and replace it because the bevel/twist gear rotates as it engages when you insert the dist in the hole. With old point system boingers (and my 74 REPU) we'd do it trial-and-error by checking static timing with a light bulb. It's possible to static time the electronic dist too, I don't remember what it is, but there's a thread or article here somewhere that tells.
