Fuel Pump Problem

Ok recently I had a problem with my fuel pump. And I think there should be a thread to help people out with the problem. So here I go.

I was going through town and i stopped at a stop sign and my car just died. I thought i killed it. It would not start. So I decided it is flooded now. I sprayed starting fluid down it. And it started for a second and died. Hmm. I checked the carb and no fuel. So I concluded the fuel pump was out. So I pushed it to a friends place. Pulled the fuel pump loose and it was fine so I checked the wirring. Hmm no power. So I decide it has to be the fuel pump relay cut off.

Before I decided to tear out the dash and look for this relay I called the guy I got my motor from. He said take out the back boxes and use the blue wire from the factory amp to jump to the black and white wire. That will get it started. So i did that it started great. But no tach. So i get it home and he tells me bring it up just be real easy on it.

The next day I show up expecting to have a full days worth of work to fix it. He walks out with a timing light and says you have no trailing ignition. I was in complete disbelief it had ran just fine. He changes the trailing ignitor and says hook the fuel pump back up and it will run just fine. I was amazed i did as told and everything ran just fine and the tach was working once more.

This is a problem I hear more and more about and even if it has not happend to you. Read this it could save you a bunch of work.

Here is another note if you ever remove the fuel pump shield have some zip ties handy because more than likely two of the bolts will not work. And they are the two that are against the frame.

Hope this helps someone.

Dan

this sounds exactly like what happened to my car yesterday the only thing is mine was sitting in my garage when it happened. I am going to give this a try and see if it works. Thanks

Anyone know where the fuel pump relay is on the car?
Is it under the seat or storage bin?
And yes I have a manuel.

Sounds like this relay needs a signal from the ignition to hold the contacts together. This is a safety so if you have an accident and the fuel lines are broken the pump doesn't keep pumping fuel. Therefore if the engine dies and the key is left on the relay contacts will open and fuel flow cease.

The fuel pump realy is behind the dash some where. But they hardly ever go bad. Matter a fact i talked to the guy who built my motor said he has never had one go out due to the relay. The wires for the pump are under the back drivers side storage been.

Can you tell us why? I mean is the trailing ign. somehow on the same circuit as the relay or the pump?
I just put together a scrapper...82 shell with an entire 85 interior including full wiring harness. My relay woul;d'nt allow my pump to work. I have by-passed it, and I can start her. Great. But my tach does'nt work, and my light is going when I check that coil.

So the signal to the tach is cut somewheres.
CPU is hooked up.

Signal for the tach comes form the trailing ignition same place the power for the fuel pump comes form it is wierd but true.

Ok this is interesting. I am having a similar problem. Now that I've jumped out the relay, the car runs and the tach DOES work. Does that mean my relay is bad and not the trailing ignitor? I just replaced the fuel pump ($144 from Mazda) because the old one wasn't pumping fuel. I removed it, plugged it into the harness inside the car, turned the key, and heard it go click holding it next to my ear. I figured it was locked up and replaced it. WRONG! So evidently I'm getting that momentary pulse of current that its supposed to get before the relay cuts it out. What do you guys think is wrong?

if your tach does not work then you do not have trailing ignitor. Check your trailing spark if you don't have any spark then you have a bad ignitor.
