Fuel Pump
I'm having some problems with my fuel pump on my '85 GSL-SE. Are the fuel pumps suppose to turn on when the key is in the "On" position?
I got a new fuel pump and it's not getting any power. No power no fuel to the engine. I hot wired the pump straight to the battery and it worked fine. So, I know the pump isn't bad. Are there any fuses, relays or etc... that I could check to figure out why the pump isn't getting any power with the original wiring?

Sure, go for it!
One neat thing to have for situations like this is a test buzzer. Just like a test light, but you don't need to be looking at it! You can make 'em fairly cheap with alligator clips, wire, and piezoelectric buzzers sourced from Radio Shack.

on all 3 of my 7's, the fuel pump would come on with the key in the full ON position. it didn't matter whether the car was running or not. i know there's a relay somewhere for the fuel pump, roundabouts the fuse box, but i just bypassed it and it's working great now.
79- stock pump? beats me... never messed with it
84 gslse- dual facet pumps from RB, already installed when i bought it
82 frankensteiner- holley red pump, self installed, screw the relay i wanna drive now!

Hi.
As far as I can tell, the fuel pump works when ever the key is ON. Mine certainly makes a loud ticking from that point onwards. I have a 1978 stock pump.
My fuel pump gave up last Wednesday. I pulled out my back seat to get at the wiring. There is a connection there somewhere (around you storage bins?). I pulled the socket apart and tested it with a multi-tester. They are quite cheap and well worth having.
When I pluged the tester into the wire that leads to the dash/battery and turned on the key, it registered 12 volts. This means that power was getting through already. If it wasn't I would have looked at the fuses, etc.
I then pulled the fuel pump and held wires from it to the battery (hotwired it). It worked fine, so I knew that the problem was somewhere in the pump's wiring. I cleaned the socket's contacts with sandpaper and a file, and it turned out that one of the contacts was lose. This popped back into place and the car is running fine again.
Hope this helps.

Check the flapper door in the AFM. It is supposed to complete the fuel pump circuit under cranking, and while its running. Thats why the -SE pump doesn't come on in the ON position.
