Fuel Pump?

Hi...1985 GSL...so...when I got the car it didn't run....obvious carburetor issues. I was not smart enough to know how to rebuild one, so i got a commercially rebuilt carb and it runs great (most of the time). I also removed all smog stuff and installed a racing beat exhaust/header assembly. The issue: I can drive the car for several days, about 10 miles per drive, then out of nowhere, it wants to die...it is definitely fuel starvation as if I keep trying to rev it up i can keep it from dying, but if I let it die, it will not start anytime soon. At first I thought it might be a clogged fuel filter. I did replace it and the old one did have some debris in it (about the only thing I didn't change when I initially got it...duh!!). I thought that might be the issue. So I drove it for a few more days and it started dying again. I immediately checked the fuel filter and it is clean fuel. So with all of that said, I am now changing the fuel pump. No big deal other than I have to "modify" the fuel pump mounting due to not being able to get an original style fuel pump. Again, no big deal. My questions is do fuel pumps fail intermittently? i would think that either the work or they don't work. Any insight or experience with like or similar issues would be appreciated!!! Mike

There's a sight glass on the carb, is there definitely no fuel there?

Electrical things can be like that. It could work fine until it warms up then something inside quits. Ignition components can do that too, don't rule them out.

Can't check the sight glass while I am trying to keep it running manipulating the gas pedal...LOL!!! Could it be a sticking float in the carb?

so....I have changed the fuel pump and it works just sitting there. I will drive the car around sunday morning (less traffic) and see if I can replicate the issue....the only other thing I can think of is there is debris in the float bowls??? Really don't want to take off the top half of the carb, but certainly will if the fuel pump doesn't fix it..

You don't need to look at it while driving, just after it dies.
If it dies and the level is low then you know fuel isn't getting there.
If it dies and the level is where it should be then it's not the fuel pump.

Well....took it out for a 10 mile drive this morning. Ran great. That actually means little...guess time will tell...
