Fuel pressure.... No Idle.

1983 mazda rx7 gsl, 12a.... 205,000

Now to start... This was my project car, it was supposed to sit for months and I would buy a part here and there. This is my 2nd fb..

Skip 4 months after and my headgasket goes on my Buick. Now this car that was in terrible shape is my only now.\

Originally, the car was running, but very rich. The carb was stripped to the point of no secondaries, just very rich and flooded alot. Then one day cranked up and it sounded lean backfiring alot.

Fast forward 3 weeks, I have another carb rebuilt and put on. I got a gas tank and added it to the car. The gas was so bad I gummed up the carb within 30 minutes..... I cleaned out but not good enough. The car would start and run very lean to the point of backfiring through the carb... The secondaries were dripping into the carb causing it to actually Idle right? Once I put a load on it however it would bog and die.

Fast forward another week. Carb rebuilt again,. Gas tank back off and into a 3 gallon for (New gas). Changed fuel filters.

New plugs, Coils, Sparkplugs, wires, cap, rotor, battery

Now it will start and run very lean, and it will only run on choke. It wants to die at 2000 without the choke on Compression is good, choke is good. No Vacuum leaks that I could find... Timing is good.

Do you think this is a fuel pressure problem? I have a new carter that should be in tommorow, however, I wanted some people ideas first.

I have to pump the carb 6 times, Turn over, it'll barely start and die. I pump the carb 6 more times, and it will start up but run very lean. I can't flood it -_- Even if it dies 50 times. I blew out the lines too. not much to be impressed with.

Would be nice to be able to drive again

Since you have a new pump on the way already, might as well try that first. When you install it, check the voltage coming to the pump as well as the ground. Report back and if that doesn't fix it, we'll go from there.

Out of curiosity, what were your compression numbers? 205k isn't unheard of but it's up there.

It's out of another car so I don't know the mileage. The previous owner said the guy before him rebuilt it. (I don't believe that). However the engine is not the original.

The car sold for $11,000 back in 04 on the registration. The front bumper is cut where an inter-cooler would go. None of the actual wiring to the gauges were hooked up, all looked like modified for aftermarket.

I think he blew the motor, took off everything put another motor in, took all his aftermarket stuff out and sold it. That's the only thing I can come up with. I'll have to get the numbers in a few weeks when I can get it on a trailer(If this doesnt work). Jose's Rotary shop, here has the Rotary engine compression tool. Will update if this fuel pump works..

Oh also, I havent checked the voltage yet but I got under there today to check the wiring and they had the fuel pump wires twisted on with a nice coating of green acid on ground and +. Nothing but electrical tape holding it together -____-

Sounds like a nightmare. Who rebuilt the carb?

Odd story, the friend is actually the guy who bought my old Rx-7. He knew how much I loved that car and would always update me on everything he did to it. We just ended up staying friends. Here we are 6 years later lol. During the Army I was damn sure that I would get another when I got out. So far so good. Got fuel pump on, fuel pressure is 3x more coming out. I just wish I could start it up.. The exhaust is so loud and the neighbors wouldn't like it.

Well, I got it on. It started out nice, ran nice, warmed up nice, idled nice, then I shut it off and start it back up, a little rough starting up but not bad.

Then I start it up a 3rd time, check the carb again and the secondaries (firewall) is leaking like a stream >.< Rebuilt a 2nd time and it's still leaking.

Started bogging down, running like crap >.<

sounds like the floats are either stuck or the needle is sticking. Same thing mine was doing. Turns out the floats were sticking on the hinge as if were that holds them. Emory cloth fixed that bastard right up.

Carb on, Carb off, Carb on, Carb off, Carb on, Carb off, I don't know whats more repetitive, the RX-7 or the Army.

I still have to clean the gas tank a de rust it. -____- (running off of a 2 gallon)

I'm going to try and shoot 2 cans of carb cleaner through it and see if it doesn't help. Maybe that little bit of oil will help the needle.
