fuel level sending unit

the fuel gauge doesn't work on my 85 gsl, the previous owner said he's changed the sending unit a few times and it will work for a while, the most recent time for about a year. They were all used sending units that he put in. I was wondering is it just that they are old sending units that are going bad coincidentally because they are old, or could there be something wrong with the car thats burning up sending units? I'd like to figure this out before I put a new one in, thanks :]

yep, mine doesnt work. the "hit the bottom of the gas tank" thing doesnt work either. well atleast for me. i have a wire that is off. it's the yellow one. so now i guess i have to have a whole new sending unit from the tank.

mines so random, now i just go by how many miles. I forgot how manyi got per tank since i havnt drove it in a few months

Bite the bullet guys. drop the tank and replace the sending unit, and the sock inside the tank while it is open, also this is a great time to check the top of the tank for leaks thin spots and rust It is a pain but mine works fine now, the sock was a mess of crap.

what is this "sock" you speak of? could this cause problems with the fuel level sending unit?

I don't mind changing the sending unit, actually, I plan on it, but I want to make sure theres nothing wrong with the wiring that's going to ruin the new one

it probably has to do with the wiring at the sender. it always corrodes. perhaps if the sender was changed so many times, all the previous owner did was nudge the wires to touch the contacts properly. my 85 is missing the yellow wire and it reads fine. i guess i just got lucky. the 80 i have, well it's about an 1/8 of a tank off all of the time. when i fill it up, it won't go much past 7/8

My SE is the same way-never reads completely full, and the low fuel lamp doesn't come on. I always drive it way past empty before filling it. Someday that's gonna bite me in the ***...

try driving with a gague that doesn't read. i remember pushing at least twice!!!!

haha my gauge hasnt worked since i bought the car 3 years ago! I have ran out of gas twice, once because I didnt have any money for gas (but drove around a lot anyway) and once because I got shafted at an old gas station. (I bought a new fuel pump and filter, and droped the tank before figureing it out)

I had the tank out, but didnt put a level sender in because I wanted to get back on the road and didnt want to wait a week to get the part from mazda

A new one from the dealer is close to $100, but worth it. Don't order the gasket seperately because the new sender comes with one.

The sock is a fiber filter that fits over the end of the intake line to the engine inside the tank.

Holy ****! $100 for the sender?

Im saving my cash for a new car, ill drive without the gauge for now... (dont worry, looking for a first gen to swap my street port into )
