Fuel Hose Failure, Seen This Before?

Hey guys,

In the middle of my GSL rear axle swap, I decided to go and replace my fuel filter since access it a lot easier without the axle in the way.

While removing hose clamps and trying to get the hose out of the barbed fitting, the hose started to disintegrate in my hands.

In 2017 I installed all new fuel hose, from a reputable supplier. Brand is Flennor and is German made...ethanol fuel approved etc. Supposed to be the best!!

The supplier has not seen this before and I will probably be sending them back a sample to discuss with manufacturer.

The cracks extend basically along the length of the line, not just isolated to the clamped area. This hose was installed in quite a gentle environment... no heat/oil..., this particular one was up by where the lines enter the tank. And that big fuel filter I have is supported with its own bracket, so the hose was not stressed or loaded in any way. I am going to pull all of the hose out of the car and will start looking for replacement.

I do not go out of my way to run Ethanol free fuel, and I premix with Idemitsu oz/.gallon. Car will sit for the winter in storage, usually with fuel stabilize in the system.

Small cracks fund as the fabric over-braid is pulled back.

that is your problem, all the German hose does that (do that? are that way?) you're better off with the 35 year old Mazda stuff

Lol. Ya and I was thinking I will be super smart and try to replace with best quality available metric hose...!

So J9, is the Mazda stuff still available? Part number for feed hose is 9935-80-8999. Comes up as "HOSE-VAC" with a list price of $35..... per foot or meter?!!

The Gates Barricade low pressure hose seems good... might try that.

that 9935-80-8999 is 8mm vacuum hose (maybe low pressure fuel line, it is a meter, but its not what you want)

the Gates hose is ok, at least its cheap and easy to get

I've never had that happen with an original hose or an aftermarket bulk replacement. I think your heart and mind were in the right place when you replaced the fuel hose. I just think the quality is not what it was hyped to be. Shame too because it looks like a nice product!

I've always just gotten fuel line from the closest parts store (Napa, AutoZone, Knects, etc) and never had this issue.

Take Cohline 2134 best german company,
built fuel line especially for carburator all fuel sort. 8 years test with very aggressive super E 10 without any issue.

I honestly think the company just made a bad batch of rubber, the hoses look worst than 40 year old OEM ones after you try bending them. Unless you are running an aggressive mix just get the generic stuff you cut by the length at the auto store, what you took a picture of is literally " the worst that can happen" but you won't spend more than 10$ on hoses if that. You are lucky the house didn't actually rupture. Also, @Rx7fb spirit r , how long does your inline filter usually last before it starts showing signs of yellowing/warpage if at all? Mine start showing signs of yellowing after about 8 months and warping after a year. Maybe I should put a little heat shield around it haha.

So the "German OEM" stuff seems to be hit or miss in terms of quality. SpiritR, the brand in my photos is Flennor, and is supposed to be multi fuel approved, ethanol etc.

Here is a thread from the classic 911 guys, with similar failure of Choline product:
Cotton Braided Fuel Hose - Pelican Parts Forums

Seems the air cooled VW guys also run this type of cotton braid metric hose and run into problems.

But at same time, you only usually make a thread about fuel hose when you have a problem...!

So could be batch issue, etc.

I had a hint last season at a problem, One of my hose connections started leaking, I chalked it up to a worn out OEM style spring clamp and replaced it with a fuel injection style clamp. That was probably the first sign.
