Friction Modifier

As some of you know I work for Ford. My parts guy recomended some "Friction Modifier" in my rear end to help eliminate some of the chatter around turns.

Has anyone used this before?

I cant see any harm in it since they use it in all of our cars with LSD.

Any input at all will help other wise I will post what happened in about 2 weeks as I am gonna try it on Monday.

Jason

as i recall...during the short time i worked at a lube place, they stuck it in all cars that had lsd ( if it wasn't dodge cause they had their own mopar stuff) but most all other vehicles used the ford friction modifier, so i don't think it'll have any negative effects, it'll either not do anything for you, or make the noise go away...hope that helps...

From what I've heard on here, yeah, you want "LSD additive" in your diff if you can get it.

Yeah. The high dollar "LSD" lubes have the same basic stuff already in it. It just helps the clutchs grab when needed, and slip as required for turns.
Basic gear oil lacks this type of stuff, and often the rear will chatter/clunk while turning. Adding this additive usually clears up the problem.

You need it. Add 1 qt. of lube, then then the modifer, then top off with most of the 2nd qt. of lube.

yes, the Ford stuff works awesome, but smells real bad.

I know that GM has their own and Chrysler has their own, but also since I work for a Ford dealership, I use it in all my diff rebuilds.... it's all the same stuff with different labels

Well, I've done some searching but need some more info:

Installed an 83 lsd a couple of weeks ago and love it! But I'm still getting some chatter, especially when cold. Not sure if this is normal, or if I have a pending issue of some sort.

I filled the diff with Royal Purple (includes lsd addative). I figured that it would work best, since they seem to have a good name and it was damned expensive. lol.

I'm also getting some vibrations on the freeway during the first dozen miles or so, almost feels like a ujoint, but seems to clear up after awhile. I'm thinking it might also be related to the lsd.

Any help or info on this would be appreciated. Thanks...

Generally, if you have chatter, you need lsd additive. Or go to a full synthetic diff lube. Either way, you need it.

Well, that's the thing. Royal Purple is full synthetic, and it has the lsd addative. I'm just hoping that there isn't a problem with the lsd itself. I'll try adding some and see if it improves. Thanks...

I just went to pep boys about a week after I changed my LSD oil and used no lsd additive when changingit, then added it, and the chatter went away.

Most would run a synthetic gear oil in the tranny. Royal Purple, Amsoil, Valvoline or an equivalent.
