Fram extra guard oil filter???
Ok, so when I went to buy an oil filter today..I ended up just going to canadian tire..I didnt really want to buy the motomaster filter so I tried to go top end.. the only filter that would fit other than the cheapo was this fram filter that looked prety good I think it was called the extra guard? anyway I get home and I notice it says its desgined for synthetic oils...it also says it holds 70% more than a standard filter and lasts 11 000 miles. At this point I feel a bit stupid for buying this thing, questioning if I should use it but I figure since synthetic lasts longer this is just a longer lasting filter...I cant see it not filtering my dinosaur oil so Im sure it wont hurt? Is synthetic really different to filter?

If the guy behind the counter is sharp and knows his interchanges, you might be able find the taller filter in another brand that was used in the older rotarys. I didn't think the short ones were that good, simply a redsign for economics, yet I had 190k+ miles on my Riviera and the oil always looked factory fresh with with oil changes every 2800 miles.

In the past few years I have bought 3 or 4 Carquest filters, and two of them had the threads screwed up and would not screw onto my filter adapter. I have bought 5
Wix filters, and two of those had the threads badly formed and would not screw onto my filter adapter. I have finally decided to ignore all the BS I have been getting from the guys in the auto parts stores, and I have gone back to Fram filters. I have been using Fram filters since 1958, I have owned a LOT of cars, and I have never had a problem with a Fram filter. I change them with my oil every 4000 miles, and I have gotten excellent engine life with both piston and rotary engnines using them.
The filter you describe is a higher capacity filter, and refers to synthetic oils because people generally run synthetics for a lot more miles, and so the filter can collect a lot more debris.

Kn and fram extra guard, are overpriced filters. Wix gold filters are about 1/2 what the fram extra guard is and has the check valve which is a silicone check valve designed not to distort under heat and allow oil to bypass. It also has twice the media of most filters.
filters i trust and are resonably priced are the original Mazda filter and the Napa gold.

I won't use anything but Mazda filters. If you cut open a Mazda filter and one of the auto parts store filters, you will see quite a difference. They're a couple more bucks and a little more hassle to get, but they're worth it.

I've used Fram filters forever, with absolutely no problems. After reading so many negative comments about them I decided I should change, but wanted to do the research first. I'm looking for the site I found, but basically they were surprised to find that the Fram Tough Guard was every bit as good as their favorite filter (I think it was a Purolator). Anyway, I'm back to using Fram again, with no worries. By the way, the Fram number for the taller filter is PH2849...that's all I've ever used on my '79 since day one.

Fram oil filters with the "PH" at the front of the number, are the cheapest of the line. They have cardboard ends on the filter media.
A few years back, I saw one of these filters that cost an freind his engine. The filter media turned to mush, and totally plugged up the oil passages thruout the entire engine. Even the oil pan had paper mush in it. It looked almost like someone stuffed a bunch of toilet paper in the oil pan.
I have not used a Fram oil filter since. Sure, the odds of getting one that does this mat be million to one. Odds of winning the lottery are about 800 million to one. This means you have a better chance of getting a bad Fram, than of winning the lottery....................

If you are running a Rotary engine hard all the time, and not changing the oil every 2 to 3000 miles, you are going to have trouble eventually. I have been a mechanic for 15 years, and I have always used Fram filters and Castrol. I have NEVER had an issue with either one. You have to be on top of your oil changes to ensure a long life out of your engine. If you buy a used car with a bazzillion miles and the previous owner did not service the vehicle properly, it really doesn't matter what oil or filter you use.
