Question Found: 12A in Junkyard.......

Today I found a 12A for $100 Canadian, with a carb, and possibly a tranny. I need a carb to rebuild, but..... its been sitting outside for 4 years, and is seased..... Does anybody have any ideas, is it worth it, or not? I could rebuild the carb off of that while I still drive this one. And eventually rebuild the engine, if that is possible. Or are both the carb and engine complete garbage if they sat outside for so long???

It depends on if they were exposed to the elements or not. The engine might be okay (try filling it with MMO or ATF and letting it sit for a while, then turning it with a pry bar), and the carb, though it almost certainly needs that rebuild, is pretty much indestructible.

So thats not a bad deal if that carb is industructable, and can be rebuilt.. The engine was exposed to the elements, no oil fill cap or anything... Is it possible to tear down and rebuild it? Kinda as a side project...

It's possible, but I'd open it up and look at it before I started ordering parts. Engine rebuild kits are very expensive.

Unless there's something wrong with it prima facie, yeah.

If it has rust inside, (99% sure based on what you describe) - then it's worthless.

Only good thing about it would be to take it apart, keep the nuts and bolts,

Practice porting with the plates

or

Make a clock out of the rotor or rotor-housing.

heh... I dont believe that df.... I took a motor that sat for 6 years outside... in the elements.... degreased it... ran water through the motor.... (didnt budge turning over, seals easily let water through.... then poored a qt of atf in it for three days into any and every hole i could find....

and then i got it broken loose after three days... lots of crap coming out of exhaust port.... slight compression, if any.... stuck it in an 82 gsl.... got up to 50 mph with brother pushing in his sentra.... stuck it in second gear.... 20 seconds later it started.... ran the ***** out of it... as much as i could..... maybe 5 miles.... went home... atf'ed it over night.....

ran the hell out of it 5 more miles, went home... did a FULL tune up, then it started right up.... gave it back to the guy.... he's been driving it since...

went from a siezed POS to a nice smooth purring high compression 12a...... he has put atleast 10K since then... was well worth it for him.... new expirence for me....

Are you refering to the carb or the engine being worthless?if the rotor housings and rotors have to be replaced when you rebuild, couldn't you sandblast the casing or whatever that holds the rotor housing? But anyways, the carb is what I am in need of, if that works, maybe thats all I will take. More opinions would be great.

what do you mean, maybe a tranny too ?? $ 100 dollors
is the going price for a rotory engine around here. Even if i were to find a 20b, the mexicans are,,,well stupid !!
Not everybody is rich like you DF,or officer freak,,,Lol
you forgot about the rotor housing fish tank. The only real way to kill a rotory engine is to run it dry of oil, then **** happens. but i'd say try to find an engine that had the hood on the car and maybe even an aircleaner on the carb still.

You guys are Pissy.

Andrew - If the engine had water inside, it has rust. If it has rust, it ain't running. Your description is just of a sitting engine, not one that has been out getting water in it.

rotary_neubie - If the engine has rust, then all the seals, and bearings will be ****. The carb should be fine with a rebuild.

MarkPerez - That's "SIR" to you.

A carburator that is gummed up with old gas and crap is much better then one that is rusted inside.

Buy it, and take it apart. Hell, I bought a whole FC for $375 delivered to my house, just so I can take the engine apart and look at the rotors.

The car ran fine - which actually seemed to upset the junkyard owner.......I bought the car as it was dropped off, so they didn't have time to inspect it.

But, the mission was to strip the car anyways.......so I attacked it with all the tools I have.

I've still been making a profit on the vehicle despite the hundreds of dollars I have had to spend on more tools. It's a fun experience.
