Flywheel on with an act of God!
Ok I have rebuilt 10 rotary engines, and the same one a couple of times After a nite racing, if you know what I mean LOL So Ive done this before...
But this 1985 Rx-7 GSL 12A has me throwing screwdrivers! Ok, I got the nut off with a 3/4" Snap On impact, no problem there. But now I have broken 2 flywheel pullers!
Anyone got a clue on this one?

Man I have beat the holy living S*it outta this thing, so badly I thought I was gonna get the cops there for noise at 2 AM Just didnt want to take a chance on bending the eccentric shaft. This one has one apex outta the 1st rotor, (odd huh considering most rotary problems are the 2nd rotor?)
Talked to an old buddy, whom is an old Mazda mechanic (and still is). He said taking a punch of some kind through the holes that you attach the puller to and driving it against one of the bolts holding the motor together and then hitting the flywheel with a hammer from the opposite side would do it... He said he had some really bad ones when resurfacing flywheels after clutch jobs. I didnt want to keep asking silly questions but? wonder what good that is gonna do? Seems like you have to have equal pressure all the way around or at least opposite sides?? Correct?
Me thinks its time for the old smoke wrench ? LOL Just joking...
And does anyone know anyone that has or makes a seal kit for less than $775? (Apex, corner seals, side seals etc) Last one I did I had a buddy of mine make me a couple... But he said hes not spending 2 hours each again, on something so small? lol

Yeah yeah yeah, now the fun begins, still need a seal kit ? Anyone know of one cheap for a 85 12A
Maybe I should make drinking an intergal part of every rebuild? LOL

Yeah those flywheels are a bitch! why couldn't they just use a bolt on wheel like everyone else?
Anyway, I've had one that was hard like yours and this is what I did. There is a little metal accsess plate on the intake/exhaust side of the engine. Take that off and get a 3 pound sledge and whack the flywheel. Turn the flywheel 90 degrees and whack it again. repeat untill it pops off. your basicly walking the flywheel off.
I did the same thing you did. broke a puller, whacked it with a hammer, and even put a 3' prybar between the engine and flywheel and whacked it with a hammer while prying on it. When I tried the method above it took about 6 hits before it poped off.
Good luck,
Mike

Man I'm glad i never had these problems. I did the ol' bolt something huge to the flywheel and put a 6 foot cheater bar on the breaker bar to pop the flywheel nut loose. The front pulley bolt was actually harder to remove, I broke several things before the bolt finally came off. I think all that torquing weakened the magic bond at the flywheel 'cause it only took a couple thwacks with a deadblow.
Hmm, maybe this is the first time air tools AREN'T the answer.
