Flooding issue

imagine that an rx7 with a flooding issue. I have an 84 gs with factory 12A. It has a hard time starting, if it sits for any period of time loinger than say 20 minutes. Whne it does start, it smokes bad!!!! flooding out, you can smell the gas. If it sits overnight, good luck getting it to start at all the next day without a push. It cranks great but its like it is getting spark to the fuel only once in a while, it will crank for a good 10 times before it even attempts to fire, then it doesn't fire up, and goes back to cranking, sometimes it won't even attemp to fire. Please do not tell me I need a new carb, if it is to be than I suppose I will have to break down and get one. Once the car does start though, it runs great. Anyone got a clue? CARB, maybe?

Well when you have a hard starting problem and you can smell gas, then you need to pull out the spark plugs and check them to see if they are soaking with gas. Then you have to go through a deflooding step for your motor. Look in the FAQ section at the top of the 1st gen forums for deflooding procedure......Look down the carb and see if you have gas flowing down when you have the fule pump on. If it is then your needle and seats may be stuck open or your vent solenoid is not working or hooked up. That's in the FAQ section too I believe. Good luck.

Welcom to the forum and the Darkside.

First thing I would do is a compression test. You neglected to mention how many miles are on the engine, what kind of maintinance the car has had and is anything modded? If the engine shows good compression, then it's time to look into some carb work.

In my sig line is a link to the online FSMs, carb manual, etc.. Read and download whatever you need, then read some more.

Could be a timing issue.... How does it run once you manage to get it started? And yes, make sure your vent solenoid is hooked up.

Oh yeah, and you might want to grab a can of Seafoam next time you're out

The car ran fine until my ex, I will name no names, put a different carb on it, and didn't bother to time it, which was the problem. the compression is fine, the timing is on, and I take good care of it, well maintained. I have owned many rx7's, I can honestly say I have never had hard starting issues as I have with this one.

He thought it was my carb so he changed with another rx carb, it still ran that same way(like ****) , but then I had starting issues after he switched it. So, I adjusted the timing and now it runs great, the timing is right on, but it only runs great now when I can get it to start. Once it starts it is fine. Most of the time I have to push start it, cause it will crank and crank all day long, but won't start, it tries to fire, but it is like not getting enough gas, and then when it finally starts, it chokes out the first few minutes like it was flooded? Once it is warmed up, you can shut it off and it will fire right back up, but you let it sit for 15 minutes and its back to cranking and trying to fire again. Think maybe a new carb would do it? Anyone got one for sale?

Did you use a timing light to set the timing?

If you still have the old carb, I would have it rebuilt and reinstall it. Then check the fuel filter and the ignition system, along with anything that the ex may have disturbed when he swapped carbs. He may have missed something on the install.

Check that the choke was hooked back up properly. Upgrading your ignition to say DLIDFIS or 2GFDIS (search) could also help it catch quicker.

I found the issue, I need a new carb. My ex took my old carb when we split and sold all 7 he had in the garage including mine for a high performance one, so I just need a new one. The primary carbs are not the ones flooding the car out, it is the secondaries, when I shut the car off, the secondaries fill up with gas. like to the brim of the carburator, one of the needles must be sticking or something. I just find it easier to get a new one and start over. Who knows what other problems that carb may have after he messed with it. Anyone have one for sale? LOL

Instead of buying another used one with potential problems, have your's rebuilt. PM me if interested. Assuming this is a stock Nikki of couse.

Out of curiosity, did your ex replace the fuel pump, and if so, with what model?

no he didn't replace the fuel pump, just the carb. It is a stock carb that came off another rx. I am not rebuilding the thing, I heard they are bear since they have a ton more jet than a normal four barrel.

Umm, nope. Just the usual four jets and rebuilds aren't all that tough if you can follow instructions. Of course this is your choice though. Good luck.
