Thumbs down Flooded, but I can't get it unflooded. :(

I finally got everything in order, but my car was flooded(I think) the last time I was cranking it. I took the plugs out, yes, they were fuel soaked, so I dried them off, cranked the motor to blow itself out, and I even grounded a plug onthe chassis to make sure it has spark, and both my leadings and trailings do. So everything looks fine, but I can't seem to get it unflooded. Everytime I put the plugs back in, I just end up soaking them with fuel again. I can't understand it, it's getting spark.

Anybody have an idea?

ATF?

Heres a quick solution to never worrying about flooding ever again.

behind the driver seat, remove the storage bin and you'll find a connector with 2 wires leading into a gromet into the floor. That is the fuel pump wires. Splice one and install a switch. Or just unplug it and crank the motor a few times and it'll get rid of the excess fuel and clean out the spark plug area.

The car may even start in this process, but quickly die. After that plug the connector back in or switch it back on and you'll start first try.

I only did that recently but I should have done that mod from the start. Also it serves as a fuel cut and nobody can steal your car.

i got easier way of unflooding. unplug the positives on the coils and crank the engine over. this stops the injectors from firing b/c mazda decided to be smart and run the injectors off of the crank angle sensor and coil power. so if you unplug those 2 wires, the injectors don't fire. crank it and get the excess out of the way, plug the wires back on and your good to go.

Thanks, while blowing the excess out, I was wondering that, blowing it all out, as the injectors fire it right back in....I wasn't sure if there was a way to stop the pump fairly easily or not. Thanks, I'll give that a try.

I Have to agree with jimmy, ive done the same thing, ive got a fuel pump switch under the dash..Great for unflooding and anti theft......Terrible for forgetting its there right after u buy the car and begin trouble shooting until u find the switch again.

thaks guys, I unplugged the pump, and I got the car started with some persuasion.

too bad it's still doing the same thing as before as far as not revving to redline.

Try changing the plugs, plug wires, coils, ignitors and possibly the distributor.

I'm not just gonna hang a hundred parts on it. Espcially expensive parts. The plugs have about 20 miles on them. I've replaced the fuel filter, cap and rotor, and my wires should be here today. We'll see if that helps.

Have you tested your ignitors?

Here's one way: http://www.geocities.com/cd23c/test.html

The factory manual has a light bulb method.

It flooded again today, but I think I know what's going on now....

I took the plugs out, and the ones that are fuel soaked are the trailing plugs. Now I tested them to see if they were getting spark, and they are, so I'm not totally sure what the problem is. I'm going to go pick up ignitors, or maybe even the whole ditsy from an RX-7 in the junk yard and replace the trailing ignitor and see what it does. I thought it worked, as I have a tach, and the tach works off the trailing ignitor, but I'm not so sure it's working as it should.

Any suggestions are appeciated.

Ok, so far I've replaced, plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. I just put the wires on, and it actually started right up, I'm not sure if it was a fluke or not, but the car still cuts out at higher rpms.

My friend is going to bring over his diagnostic tools later, and we're going to check as much as we can out.

Anybody have any other ideas? I'm not sure what else to do.

Found out today, my 5th and 6th ports are fozen closed....this after them only being in there for 20 miles. They were fine when I put the engine together, and fine after the engine was put in the car.

Why would they freeze up so fast? And like rxmfn7 said, would this actually cause my problem? I was under the impression that this would only cause a lack of power in the top end, not a total loss and lack of revving.

BTW, the new wires seemed to have stopped the hard start problem. So now it starts fine, although I still haven't gotten much progress on the rev problem. I guess I'll get these ports straightened out and see what it does.
