Flames out of exhaust

my wife swears that while driving behind me whenever i am hard on the throttle and let off flames come out of the exhaust. Is this possible and can it hurt anything? The car is stock with an exhaust system.

It's called a backfire, RX7's are notorious for fireballing because the combustion process continues to take place inside the exhaust system. Hence the air pump.
