fixed my buzzers

I know most folks don't want their buzzers for the key, door ajar, and seat belts working but I do. Mine haven't worked for awhile now and I finally fixed it today.

Turns out all these buzzers rely on the ignition key buzzer switch to operate. Thay are kind of wired in series so if the ignition key buzzer is not operational the door and seat belt buzzers will never work either.

I checked the doors by seeing of the dome light goes on or off when I open them. They did so I knew those switches were fine.

I checked the seat belt switch which is in the belt recepticle. If you push the seat all the way forward and pull back the carpet tab at the boot of the belt recepticle (right against the tunnel) you will see some wires going up into the belt recepticle. Follow these down and you get to a connector. I tested the belt switch and it was ok, but when I looked at the other side of the connection I saw no change when I put the key in and turned thru ACC to ON. There should have been a change because how can it detect the seat belt switch if theres no voltage.

I looked thru the electrical diagrams again and noticed that the ignition key buzzer switch looked like it supplied power to the buzzer and these other switches. Make sense because you only want things buzzing when your in the car with the keys in it. DOH!.

I pulled the left side of the steering column cover off and had a look. Facing you as you look at the iginition switch from/thru the steering wheel you will see a small rectangular white (yellowed with age) plastic box fastened by two screws on opposite corners with blue and green wires coming into it. I have an SA so this may differ on FBs.

I took this box off and theres a small plastic plunger on it that pokes into the ignition swicth. As the key is inserted and rotated a cam pushes on this plunger and closes the circuit. I tried it manually and I could see voltage on the belt circuit now. Hmmm, so I carefully reattached the box and it didn't work. More hmmmm, I took it off and held it on by hand and it worked. I then very carefully put it back on testing it as I screwed it down. I guess that plunger has to be positioned just right to work. I must have jiggered it up when I replaced the ignition wire connector a while ago.

I now have door ajar buzzer, key in ignition buzzer and seat belt buzzers that all work as designed. I hope this little bit of knowledge helps someone out.

Next up, get all the idiot lights to light up when the key is switched on and get my tach to work as a voltage meter when the key is turned on.

oh man that's great! ever since i had to switch ignition switches i haven't had the buzzers, wasn't worried about it, but it'll give me something to do tomorrow thanks lol ....i kinda missed them.

damn now i won't be able to sleep thinking that i may be able to fix another thing in my car tomorrow haha...do you think this will also fix the ignition light/lamp? (the light where the key goes into) that would be really neat.

theres a buzz goin off every time i pull the steering wheel...and since i have no power steering...i pull the wheel a lot when i turn and the buzz keeps goin off whenever im turning the wheel.....it's very annoying

what is this buzzer for and how do i stop it?.....im guessing it is some anti theft since it only happens when u tug on the steering wheel....but its a wild guess...can anyone help? its a 1985 GSL-SE....

and are seatbelt buzzers supposed to go off when the car is on and nobody is wearing their seatbelt?..same goes for the door buzzer? did they come on the GSL-SE?

Good job Tim. To keep with the Holiday gifts for the RX7, I too have been fixing things for the Turbo FB. Scroll down toward the bottom of the page. https://www.rx7club.com/build-threads-293/project-updates-553481/page4/ I have also been porting my wastegate on the TO4E hybrid. If it turns out as nice as I expect, the S4 turbo on the 12A will also get a 40mm wastegate . Good times Tim!

This really only applies to SAs and maybe FBs. I doubt the GSL-SE uses the same wiring or ignition setup but its worth trying. Get out the electrical diagrams for your year and start puzzling it out.

Thanks for the kudos guys. Hope it helps someone else puzzle it out.

BTW if you want to disable these buzzers then just unhook the 2 wire connector at the base of the steering column with the green and blue wires running into it. This is easy as you don't even have to remove the cover on the steering column. The only buzzer left will be the over rev buzzer if you have one.

went out and did this today, the only thing different from SA to FB is that if you're looking at the steering wheel, the box is behind the ignition switch so it's kinda hidden and it has 2 washer locks so you have to pry those off being careful not to break them.

also on mine i had to press the plunger in almost all the way for it to work and this wasn't cutting it for the key, so i took apart the little box (it just pries off) BE CAREFUL DOING THIS, THE SOLDERING IS VERY WEAK ask me how i know :P. anyways take the box off and pull the two metal pins out and clean the contact points with a piece of sand paper, put it back together and enjoy the annoying buzzers.
