Cool fitting larger front speakers in first gen

Hey, has anyone ever successfully put 5 1/4 or even 6 in speakers in the front of a first gen? 4 in speakers suck and I want to switch them but want to get more info/pics before I start cutting stuff apart. thanks

I made new front panels, cuz I didnt want to cut the old one, man dont ask me why. Like it was ever gonna be stock again? But I got 5 1/4 IMPP Pioneer 3 ways in the fron of my 85. They were left overs from an Install so I took em when offered them at work... I got 4 inch MTX midranges in the upper doors, and you dont even have to cut them out, they fit perfcetly... I just cut the carb board door panel, and left the material on the door panel in tack, doesnt even look like a speaker is there ...

Not my car, but it doesn't mean I can't do something similar.

I believe it's custom. I got it from Steve's (AJC13B) website. Supposedly it was custom made by some company called "To the Max" down under.

I don't usually like Tan interiors, but that one is very nice.

you dont wanna put big speaks in your doors,
door speakers are only good for frequency's below 150hz
you will have a pretty big void to fill if you do,
you could add tweets but your void will be 150hz-1khz

no midbass
go with kick panels,
they were just up on ebay,
some one got the link?
some guy made them
sure he'd make you a pair if you asked.

btw why is name 82transam?
no offense but do you think we care about your 82 ta?????

sorry just an odd sig,
by the looks of the way you chose your sig it doesnt look like your to serious of an re-enthusiast
just my pov

you can build your own panels. pull your door panel off; remove pocket; straighten all the metal thingies and take off the lower panel for measurement. there is a section on the door that is square looking, kinda recessed with a 10mm bolt in it, open that up for sound waves to use the door cavity for an enclosure. little cutting, little carpeting and you end up with some mix matched components consisting of JL audio 5.25" mid-bass driver's and som MB Quart QM 19nx's. see for yourself...

Why are you so worked up over a user name? Am I Felix Wankel? No. Your car won't kill too many V8's like it is.... Am I bitching? No.

hey v8kilr no offense but if you want to come out here to NJ we'll race, my TA vs your rx7 and we'll see how much "V8 killing" you'll be doing. I love a wide variety of cars, first gen rx7's being my favorite but I also love muscle cars as well. I've been a muscle car guy way longer that an rx7 guy. Yea I like my rex better but I still like my TA too. Plus Felix is right it's just my ******* user name it doesn't mean I like TA's and not rx7's. chill out man. Hey Felix, thanks for visiting my site, your probably viewer # 00001

Don't worry Felix stuff for the TA will be up soon. Right now it's sitting there waiting for me to work on it. It needs and engine rebuild and reapint. Black with gold along the bottom (Like the Recaro edition) I'll get some pics but right now the "cool" green paint job'll make ya want to throwup on it. Stupid previous owner painted it that color. foolish person. Oh sorry v8kilr, am I talking TA's too much for you I'm sorry, NOT!!!!!

see thats typical

why didnt you say,
"we'll race my 7?"
and yes i have had seen plenty v8's in the rear view,
if i end up at mike p's for the engine swap i'll bring some footage,
mostly put the hurt on mustangs,
its all street racing clips.
its just experienced driver vs. some punk kid "not you the guys i race" who's mommy bought them i shiney new toy for graduation.

if you now your 7 you can make it run in a rolling street race,
i seem to know mine pretty good.it's my 5th,my 3rd 1st gen.

rx7's are the only cars i've ever owned all my life

any i just wouldnt go to a ta board and have my name 84rx7,
i'd get flamed on bad
if you would like we could do an example at like camaroz28.com if you like?

but nevertheless NONE of my POSTS are to be intended as flames,
i was just making a simple observation.

Well on my 85, I put those 4's in the hole that was already in the door, I didnt really wanna get into making door panels and such. I was kinda busy at work and after doing that Lexus around the same time, I pretty much opted a pass on it

On my 80, I built buildouts and had 2 5 1/4" midbasses. I had a removeable grill and when you removed the grill the inside of the door buildout was mirror. And before anyone asks I have a pic somewhere and Ill have to 'sideways' Bob to scan some more. I think hes growing weary of me asking

btw why is name 82transam?

David that was kinda uncalled for dude, I love the 1st gen RX-7 myself, but when you say muscle cars I liked the old chevelle, the old nova's and old camaros, stuff like that. I think there are a lot of people that like all sort of cars...

The absolute antithesis of what I believe this Forum is about. Obviously, I like the interior job, but I can't stand unlimited budget repops. You're looking at probably $4 Gs of interior work that cant' be easily replicated by 98% of the members here. If that's OK, then we all need to step up to an Aeromotive fuel pump immediately and ditch the Carters...

---> 82transam Buy an adaptor ring or make one out of 1/2" MDF that will accept your speaker. After drilling it to accept your speaker, fasten it to the interior sheetmetal. Get your panel piece and loosen the carpet or vinyl covering and open up the hole so it fits over the new MDF ring when installed. Put the panel on, tuck the carpet or vinyl into the ring. The whole effect will be a gentle rising of the panel material to your speaker. attach speaker and then the grill. If you really want to make an SQL impact, play with tilting the speaker up and towards or away from your listening postion in the driver's seat (get a buddy to help, it's a lot easier, trust me...) to find your speakers best imaging angles. Start carving away at the MDF ring to keep that angle and repeat the above steps. Minimal money involved, just your time. Now you've got a little more $$ saved up for the superior Mallory Comp110 fuel pump...
