fitment between 79 and 83 radiators?

So im not sure what these parts are called but I need a new radiator for my 83 and have a nice 79 complete assembly at my finger tips with a good front mount oil cooler.

The parts circled in red I assume it would be the radiator shroud?? will the 79 work in the 83 or do I use the 79 rad and oil cooler with the 83 shroud..Thanks in advance!!

The sheet metal in front of the radiator remains the same. The fan shroud is
your choice, it probably won't affect much either way.

just compare the 2 once u get it all out of the car. the rad in the 83 will be taller than the 79 so i'm not sure if the 83 shroud will work on the 79, maybe with only the top 2 bolts. i'm guessing u have the necessary oil lines for swapping to the fmoc?

I will have some fresh lines made for fmoc, all the 79 stuff is still mounted in the car. The 83 has been striped so I could paint the engine bay.

I would swap all the 79 oil/water cooling parts over to the 83. I believe the 83 body still has the brackets to mount the FMOC. Follow my FMOC mod in the archives for general guidance. Link is in my sig.

Great write up. I used a very similar method to install an FC oil cooler in my 83. Main differences were the hose I used was nowhere near as overkill, and I cut the FC line that goes to the rear iron, and welded my own barb on the end to ensure solid seal.
Also routed the line from the front of the engine under the cooler, then looped back to the top fitting from the front side. Makes for less chance for hose getting crimped.

Very nice write up ^..The stock mounting point you mentioned on the 83 is it located on the sheet metal that supports the radiator??

IIRC, they're on the frame/body. If they aren't you may need to follow the write-up. I know the 84/85 years had the brackets on all models, even though only the SE had the FMOC. 83 was the only year that no models had the FMOC.

Trochoid, sorry can't remember your real name. Always a excellent source of information!! Im pretty sure the FMOC mounts are not available on the 83 looking at my most recent picture of my engine bay but I will use your write up when installing the 79 FMOC.

Ummm, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the 79-82 oil cooler mount to the bottom of the radiator?
The SE oil cooler sits in front of the radiator, as it also uses the tall rad.

@ Rogue - I can confirm the SE oil cooler sits infront of the radiator, and it is the taller radiator.

Yeah, I got one as well, along with 2 83 12a cars....
What I was getting at, is the oil cooler and radiator in the 79-82 mounts to the bottom of the shorter rad, and they come out as a unit. At least, they did in my bud's 79.......

Good point Rogue, I believe you're right about how the FMOC mounts in short radiator 7s. Guess I didn't have my Tom Terrific hat on thinking that the early FMOCs mounted in the same place as the tall radiator 7s.

We all have our moments where something slips from our brain. Whether you prefer to call them "Brain Farts", "CRS" (can't remember.......stuff), or "OFS" (old fart syndrum), it happens to us all, 'specially as we get older.
They say memory is the second thing to go. I forget what was first..........
