My son and I cruised about a bit in the '82 we just bought. Then I started getting worried. Some PO had removed rat's nest and all A/C, guy we bought it from was told it has a street port. I'm just worried it may have an OMP delete and we're supposed to be pre-mixing. Where is this thing and how can I check it's operation? (yes I searched, still foggy though).

Seems to drive alright. Exhaust leaks, annoying. Brakes are needing desperate attention. Steering is sloppy. Moved out alright but seemed like it slipped a bit at higher rpms. I sure hope we can coax it back into decent shape.
Temp gauge went up to about 1/3 and never moved, that's unnerving too.

 

temp gauge sounds normal, the omp is on the front cover of the engine. If you stand on the passanger side of the car and look down on the front cover you'll see it, it has two lines that come off and run to the carb. Not exactly sure how to check if its working, maybe see if there is oil in the lines? I took mine off. Sloppy steering sounds kindof normal as well.

 

The OMP or MOP depending on preferences, is located on the lower front passenger
side of the block, under the water pump hoses. It should have 2 lines that connect it
to the intake, usually the carb if its a nikki (original carb) and a lever that is activated
off one of the carb links that goes down to the MOP and adjust the amount of oil
metered out at idle versus full throttle. If you don't see any of this and just a blank
plate instead then you probably will need to premix. I'll see if I can find a pic of it.

The temp guage looks good at 1/3. Sounds like you may have a slipping clutch and the
rest is just old-car-itis.

 

Great stuff, thanks guys. I'll look for that bit. We'll redo the brakes, get new rubber and start a rolling "refurb". Intent is a fun-to-drive short hop commuter for my 16 year old son, school, work, home, all within town. A repaint is quite likely if it proves to be a good driver, it may as well look nice. If we're lucky we'll get there without too much pain or expense. We took it to a large parking lot last night and he drove it for the first time. First time with a stick. (well, he did drive my X1/9 once for a minute, so 2nd time I guess). He did well! I took it on the street and hammered on it a little, pretty sure clutch slipped a tad under heavy load, but it goes into gear and moves forward so that's really quite important!

 

Glad to hear you are making progress

Make sure that you keep good oil in it, and at the proper level (WARNING: Chilton/Haynes manuals can mislead you into over-filling the crankcase and blowing out the oil control rings! Correct amount of oil may be located in the appendices at the back of the book).

snow or not, my "toys" run year round (unless it's really nasty), all working vehicles at my house. If it doesn't have a use (commuting someone somewhere) it's gone! (yes, racing is a legitimate use!)
