First-gen motor options? Renesis?
Got a couple of first-gen FB RX7s. 12A motors need rebuilding/replacing - bad rotor housings. Not urgent, just planning ahead.
Anyone have good 12As? Rotor housings? Rechroming?
Other options?
Renesis motor in a first-gen? How hard? How costly? What transmission?
How about Renesis in GSL-SE?
Rumors of an East Coast race series using FB bodies, 2nd-gen big brakes, and Renesis motor. Anyone know anything?
Friends built a ChumpCar second-gen with a Miata motor - slow but very reliable.
Other Mazda motors that fit? Miata? 2.0l Protege? Mazda3/5?
Holding off on a V8 for now.
Other ideas? Thanks!

Interesting idea. 13B motors scare me since I believe they're scarce, well-used, old, expensive, etc.
Plan A would be stay stock very, very cheaply.
Plan B - For the money/effort of a TII or similar, I'd prefer the much newer Renesis.
If I'm misguided, please educate me!

i looked the the renesis for mine, i still think its the best NA swap. 230+hp, it'll pass smog easily, and you can put a muffler on it. vs the Pports @230+ hp, that won't ever smog, and hates mufflers.
at the time i looked in 2006, you basically had to buy the Rx8 stuff new, so an engine was reasonable $3500ish, but the intakes and fuel rails NEW were another $3500! plus the $1500 ecu, etc etc. in 2011, id still buy a new engine, but you can probably get the intake setup for like $12
if you don't have to deal with emissions tests and noise isn't a problem the P port is a viable option. if you assume a good engine is in the $2500-3500 range (i got deals on my engine, but i reused a few bolts the rest was new), the carb will run around $1000 (carb is 450+jets and air filters and stuff), exhaust is probably another $1000, add fuel pump and go
the Rx8 motor uses a t2 style clutch, and has the same bellhousing bolt pattern as any other 74+ rotary, so you can use the stock trans, t2. the 6 speed has the shifter in a different place, so you need to figure that out, or run the SA body
since the miata and the 1st gen use the same transmission, the miata engine is really easy, you just change the tail housing and it'll bolt in the car. dumb swap though, the miata engine = sloooooow. you can turbo it, but then you're talking big bucks. rotary turbo would be easier and less money

because of the side exhaust ports, the rx8 doesn't have all the smog stuff the older engines have, and if you tune it carefully (stock ecu would be really hard to use) it might not even need a cat, although if you do, the power penalty is really small

Honestly, every single one of your questions has already been answered on this forum.... try a little searching.

Then you need to find out what's legal under your state's smog rules before making any decisions.
Technical ease and/or cost considerations will all be overridden by what you are allowed to do, what you are required to do, what you are prohibited from doing.
Smog laws vary widely. In some states (like California) the rules vary dramatically even county to county.

Well, emissions suck, but I would build a 13b mystery motor, na, with high compression rotors (9.7 fc) if it was me, or do a s6 swap. T2 is more reliable and easier iirc, but with enough time and money anything is possible...its all really going to depend on how strict your emissions regujlations are and how much you want to spend
