Maybe the cats are clogged/restricted causing a lot of backpressure on the engine to cause a powerloss and the hissing could be an exhaust leak making noise due to the pressure. I would start by either disconnecting the exhaust at the manifold to see if the power comes back or inspect EACH converter for blockage.

Sounds like a vac leak somewhere to me...I would start replacing all the vac lines. Even if some or most aren't leaking, it is an old car. Did this on my cars and even though I didn't have any leaks, it seemed to run better...maybe I had a plugged line or something....anyways, that's where I would start
