Question FInally know what's wrong....But Not how to fix it.

My car wasn't running for more then a few seconds.....Ok well I finally figured out the problem....My leading coil isn't firing.....I've put two new ones in with no change.....I am guessing the wiring to the coil is bad...Now here's my question, what do i need to do? I guess i am just going to re-wire the wires going to the leading coil but where do i need to take power from ? Or if this sounds like a problem you have had how did you fix it...? I am so close to getting this beast on the road.......it's the gsl in my sig, she 's been under construction for over 2 years....

thanks

It's probably your igniter. Try switching the igniters and see what happens. You can run it temporarily with just the leading.

Are you getting 12V to both coils when the ignition is in the ON position?

I am not sure...I didn't have a multimeter, yesterday. The car is not at my house, right now i am looking for things to check next weekend. The way I knew that the coil isn't firing is that i hooked up a timing light, and i was getting response on the trailing ciol not the leading coil, The tach doesn't work so i figure the leading coil is shot. Also i have put two different dizzies in there and i doubt that the ignigter went out from sitting around, the two dizzies worked when removed....

Well the tach is on the trailing coil, not the leading. That makes me think that there is some sort of wiring problem. 99% of the time it is NOT the coils, it is the ignitors that go out.

Disconnect the tach sending wire altogether so that the tach isn't even in the circuit. If both coils are getting 12V, then the problem is either:
Bad ignitor
Disconnected wire inside distributor
Bad trigger wire from ignitor to coil
Bad spark plug or coil wire
Bad rotor/cap
The wires can be tested with an ohmmeter, but you'll need to do a search to find how to test ignitors. I've never had a bad one yet, so I haven't had to learn that.

Probably ignitors. In any case, get a couple extras at the junkyard or on ebay. Keep them in the glove compartment for a roadside replacement.

So the ign are interchangeable? I can take one from either side and switch them?

The forward most coil is the "trailing" ignition.
Ignitors are interchangeable.
The tach is connected to the trailing coil.

As I recall, FC ignitors are different. Ignitors are about $20 on eBay, and they don't charge me at the junkyard.

If you suspect a wiring problem with the ignition. rewire from scratch and setup DLIDFIS. You'll likely need some help with the wiring if you're not electronically inclined. Someone on the board said something about going to start selling DLIDFIS harnesses to ppl, not sure if that's going through or not.
Search for jeff20b's instructions about installing DLIDFIS.

Oh, there's also a way to setup an FC coil with a 1st gen dizzy. Which is touted to be much easier, though I haven't done it myself. I forget the name of it, though. It was a fairly recent thread. If you got extra FC coils, you might want to do that instead...

Uses a 2nd gen leading coil for direct fire on leading plugs. Still uses the 1st gen J-109 ignitors, though.

There is a method for testing the ignitors. Search here or at www.mazspeed.com for the procedure.
