figuring where to start and fix it somehow....

my dad has a 1st gen rx7 sitting in the garage. it was sitting out in the outside for a good 10 years or so. i never knew wat was wrong w/ it. mileage is still at 49K. i dunno what happens to an engine thats been sitting out for so long but what my dad tells me is that the gas got old. he said that since it got old, it clogs up the carburator up so the valves would get stuck and flood the plugs all the time. it still cranks he said but its the carburator that gets stuck. after knowing this, i thought it be easy to fix....or replace.....so what is there to do? the first thing i want to do is clean the engine bay cuz its full of leaves and remove other debris. the headlights are open and cant seem to go back down. alternator looks old and funky. and needs a filter.....i would post pics but cant find a server. anyways, how do u get rid of old gas?

Purchase:
a can of carb cleaner
5 gals of regular gasoline
a fuel filter
a carb gasket kit
a repair manual

There is a drain plug in the lower surface of the fuel tank. Use it to drain out the old fuel.
Replace the fuel filter - it is located on the left side under the floor just in front of the rear axle (under a cover).
Remove the top off the carb and carefully remove each jet one at a time and blow it clear with the carb cleaner. Also clean out the float bowls, clean the sight windows, and the jets right at the bottom of the float chambers.

Once you have fresh clean gas in the tank then you can determine if the fuel pump is pumping fuel to the carb.
Then after reassembling the carb with the key on let the fuel pump fill the float bowls and check the level in each bowl by looking through the windows.

What year is this Rx-7?

Good luck

After 10 years the fuel line out of the tank will be stopped up. What I do to unstop it is, Drain the tank, spray a half to full can of carb cleaner in the tank, Buy 4 - 6 foot of the correct size fuel line, A tire valve and a hose clamp. Connect the fuel line to the output line of the tank, fill the line with carb cleaner, let it sit a bit, trim down the tire valve so it fits in the fuel line, insert it and use the clamp to hold it tight, put some air pressure to the line, start at 20psi and go up. This has worked every time.

Now clean the tank some, Reconnect the fuel pump and put a clear filter in, (do not use this filter on the road as the clear ones are glass) run the line from the out put of the pump up and into the tank, turn the switch on and let the pump run, Change the filter as it gets full, once you are happy with the look, take the line out of the tank and let it pump the carb cleaner and other stuff out into a jug to get rid of, replace the clear filter with a correct one and reconnect the fuel pump.

Clear filters that I use are plastic, and they tuck up into the clip just fine ,never have had a problem, carry a spare anyway. They only cost a couple bucks.

I have not seen a Clear Plastic one. Where do you get them?

Advanced Auto parts purulator on the rack display, comes with 2 small hoses and clamps.
Napa fuel filter 3002 ( no clamps just filter)
Wix same exact thing as NAPA just add 5 infront of it. Autozone doesnt carry any clear filters except the glass one with replacable insert. Carquest is the same as NAPA and has just about the same filters as WIX and NAPA.
These are facts (I worked at NAPA and had to deal with both my car and competitor numbers) Please dont ask about my 79 gas tank.. it was a disaster, just pull it, drain it, and get it lined. JUST DO IT FIRST!!!!!!!!!!
