Fiberglass Center Consel

I have been looking into doing something with this center peice, it seems this is a peice that is ALWAYs cracked in every FB ive seen. If it is not cracked im sure it is in a brittle stage where it will easily crack when removing it to install that new head unit. Or to fiddle with some wiring. I have looked into doing a carbon fiber peice and it seems to be very costly to produce a quality product. Even to lay the Carbon Fiber matting over the peice will take time and money. So going on the basis this is a part that is hard to find in decent shape and it seems everyone is looking for a way to install some gauges somewhere I was looking into making a center consel mold to make a Fiber Glass center peice. With this Idea of making the mold and producing a new part I was looking into making it where it would have 2 or 3.. 2 1/16" hole cuts where the ashtray is,(How many people actually use this?) there seems to be enough clearence behind it for wiring and such for the gauges. Not sure What I will do for the big hole in the center. I am open for suggestions here. I am figuring to produce this part out of fiberglass in means to restore and preserve the FBs classic interior. I am running a Boosted -SE but want to keep everything as OEM as possible. "Just my style" ;] If anyone has any ideas on what I could do for that big hole where the OEM stereo came from post them, as for anyone that would be interested in having one made also let me know. More than likely this will not be a part I will be making myself, but will assure I am very picky and the final product will have to pass my expectations before taking any orders.

thanx for any thoughtz,
Vern

I've been asking for a "blank" for a while now. Just a piece that would cover the whole area from shifter surround to the top of the vents-- one solid piece so we could do the holes and such as we wanted them.

I was figuring on getting one of those laser cut ones that there was a thread on a while back. Unfortunately, they never seemed to make one for us 81-83 owners (seems like we're last for everything ). I dunno. I'd love something to replace the faded stock one I've got, but most limited custom-made parts seem a little too plain for my taste. I'm bored, so I think I'll sketch an idea or two

If I have alot of free time in my life ever I'll do it. I'm a certified mobile electronics installer, so I all ready do fiberglass for audio. Should be fairly easy. I'd like to do it for my car too. Get rid of the AC and radio and all. My only free time is a few hours in hte evening and one day off a week.

Here's a quick idea of what I thought might look good and be useful while retaining some of the stock features. I was thinking maybe ditching the clock and leaving a blank row on the bottom for switches would be cool, but I'm also obsessed with switches lol. Let me know what you'd like to see

I wish I could draw. My daughter is great at it, but I can't even draw stick figures!

Thanks for the compliments

Does anybody have any ideas? I'd like a good place to put my air/fuel, oxygen, oil, etc. guages and space for switches, so I was thinking 3 or 4 holes. Is anybody else interested in having a blank spot on the bottom for a row of switches? I like how it adds that kind of race car look.

I've GOT to get rid of that stock thing with the faded gray paint, so the more people who get in on this the better

I'm obsessed with switches too, LOL. They just give the apperance that something magical will happen when you flip it on. On my car my fuel pump starts working, so I love that switch.

Again I have a '85 and really just want a nice formed "blank" so I can cut the hole and such as I'd like them, and my shifter isn't in the same area as stock "7" so I couldn't use a one size fits all type solution.
