Fender Mount Mirrors

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows of a kit or good way of doing a swap to fender mounted side mirrors and how difficult it is. Also, what the best mirrors to use are. Any input would be much appreciated.

I have the actual mirrors used on my ebay watch list but I will never buy them. they are always available on ebay

most members dont want or like them. The reason no one wants them is they make working under the hood near impossible unless you find a way of installing the mirrors with quick release tabs or something.

I will say that everyone agrees they do look nice

I see what you mean, I am going to figure out how I'm going to remove them easily when working on it, but I need to figure out how to mount them and patch up my doors where the mirrors are mounted now.

there is a "how to" thread in the 1st gen section. I found it while searching for these two years ago. I just have no idea what its called or how old it is.

What about using some of those super strong magnets? That way no holes to drill and they can be removed. Also, no bracing required. The magnets from some of the hardrives are pretty strong. Forget the name.

How strong are theses magnets? Wouldn't you need some sort of guide to make sure they go on correctly? I imagine adjusting the magnets once they're on the car would damage the paint. Unless you somehow separate the base from the actual mirror and could leave the base on at all times and use the magnet to attach just the mirror portion. A lot of possibilities to make it work if you want it bad enough.

Or shorten up the base and bring it closer to the cabin, say parallel the hood cowl. Honestly if I were to go that route I would try to find something that would sit lower and more flush to the body but still be fender mounted.

Make a note.... magnets are NOT that strong..... unless you're talking about electromagnets..... By the time you get up to highway speeds, you have a high potential that the wind resistance will drag the mirrors across your paint finish... scratching the paint and fenders.

The magnets in hdd's are electromagnets

I'm with you there. I think the magnets idea is probably a pipe dream. I know that when I replace my mirrors, I'm going to be getting something aftermarket. Nothing flashy, just something low profile set more towards the front of the door. The oem ones I feel are way to close to the driver. Almost gives me a headache looking in them lol.

If you have every seen or used a rare earth magnet you would know how well they work and could be used to attach something to a metal surface. I would rather try a magnet then drill a hole in my fender and regret it later. Old bad hard drives can be had for free. Wouldn't hurt to try. Just saying.

Magnets would possibly work for quick-release if you set a couple of guide pins in the mirror bases that would fit in holes in the fender, ensuring proper positioning and preventing sliding... but then you're drilling holes again.

& magnets won't stop the occasional a-hole from deciding to take off with them. Some people will steal anything that's not bolted down.

Sadly, they look nice but just are not practical - - which is probably why they went away. That, and they're a little tough on the chance-hit pedestrian.

It wouldnt be so bad if the damn hood opened the other way. I do however like the idea of the mirrors being up close to the driver just past the hood about 12" from windshield. Then again, when I do my WB kit I might just install them ON the hood. oh and rotating lift door hinges is a must
