Afternoon all,

I am in the process of building my FB into "something else".. and wanted to make a post, just to see if anyone else is interested before I start down the path too far.

I am going to be making a new front end for the car, wide fenders airdam etc. And was thinking of making a mold of the front factory fenders, and creating them as factory duplicates.

SO were talking a duplicate if the factory front fenders, with holes for lights, and all the factory mounting points... but made of fiberglass. Vacuum bagged, and light. Possibly with some core between layers for rigidity. But will have to pull a fender before deciding.

SO I am going to DGRR 2013, and IF there is interest I can bring fenders to it.

If there isnt sufficient interest, I will skip this part, and just make the widebody front without the hacked up glass front fenders as the base for my parts. (cost savings)

 

If these could be made as good solid replacements over factory parts or as significant weight savings I would be quite interested.

Not much weight to be saved over the stock fender, if any at all. The advantage would be a perfect fender that will stay perfect(until it cracks, lol).

Scott, I have a vacuum pump if you need one.

 

I am interested, also would be interested in a fiberglass hood as well

Yeah thats my thoughts.. with how rare all the other FB parts are becoming (rotor housings) I figured, while I have them, and my Son has his FB... may as well pull molds. Then if (god forbid) we need new fenders.. yes all original etc etc. But if you cant get them.. its nice to have the option.

I ended up getting rid of my RX3 after years of searching for factory fiberglass parts. Everyone knows someone in Puerto Rico who has them, or can get them.. but nobody ever gave me any contact info, or website. So in the end I sold it to a guy who was doing a complete ground up restore.. in Scotland.

 

For now at least, stock fenders are one of the few body parts actually still available.

These aren't like 14-16 gauge fenders from a 60s-70s American car. The stock fenders are shockingly light.

Plus you can't bend fiberglass to clear tires.

 

True true...
I will most likely be using the first set off the mold to hack up in creating the widebody plug my son and I are gonna try to get done before DGRR.

 

finberglass isn't a bad idea, but new fenders are cheap and available from Mazda still.
