You shouldn't have to cut up your ignition switch, but rather find a switched 12v source that comes on with the ignition. I'm sure someone can chime in on an easy spot to tap into in the engine bay, but you can grab a multimeter and start checking. Also, I believe you could run the ignition wire to a constant 12v source and the fan will continue to run until the engine temp has cooled even after you shut the car off.

Check for any connectors already in the car that may be suitable. I found a black/white cable near my interior fuse panel with a connector already on it. Not plugged into anything. Sorted!

Just use a volt meter and check to see if this new connector is switched. If it is then your golden. You could even find the mate connector and not have to cut anything.

You can put a zip tie through the fins and then use another one to hold the probe down, kinda like a universal radiator fan. Can you place the probe near the endtank and mount it to that?

maybe something like that would work? I am not a big fan of ziptieing stuff everywhere though. Did you not want to run the fan off a manual switch?

sounds like your wires are not the correct gauge. Are you using a relay to turn the fan on?

You could use the switch you already have to send power to the relay, switched 12v source usually refers to a wire that gets 12v sent to it when the key is turned to accessory or on. Do you understand how to wire the relay up?

Yes, that is what it is. It sounds like you are close to having it figured out. You could always post a picture of the painless kit you are using and the wires that run out of it. Take your old toggle switch and get it out of there, let the fan kit control when the fan kicks on and off like it is meant to do. Any manual switch in a system like that is just asking for trouble.
