You shouldn't have to cut up your ignition switch, but rather find a switched 12v source that comes on with the ignition. I'm sure someone can chime in on an easy spot to tap into in the engine bay, but you can grab a multimeter and start checking. Also, I believe you could run the ignition wire to a constant 12v source and the fan will continue to run until the engine temp has cooled even after you shut the car off.

Check for any connectors already in the car that may be suitable. I found a black/white cable near my interior fuse panel with a connector already on it. Not plugged into anything. Sorted! :)

Just use a volt meter and check to see if this new connector is switched. If it is then your golden. You could even find the mate connector and not have to cut anything.

thanks guys. i also have a question about the temp probe i cant get it to stay solid in the rad fins i herad of zip tying it but how would i doo that

Freeskier7791 03-28-16 03:17 PM

You can put a zip tie through the fins and then use another one to hold the probe down, kinda like a universal radiator fan. Can you place the probe near the endtank and mount it to that?

enrique1992 03-28-16 05:12 PM

so lets say i have to zip ties goin trough the fins on both sides of the probe then put another zip tie on the probe then tie them to each other?

maybe something like that would work? I am not a big fan of ziptieing stuff everywhere though. Did you not want to run the fan off a manual switch?

sounds like your wires are not the correct gauge. Are you using a relay to turn the fan on?

enrique1992 03-30-16 04:15 PM

i wasent i didint know any better cuz i suck a t wiring. the kit i bought has a relay and inline fuse. but i checked for a 12v source with a test light and found one real quick i couldnt belive it. it only gets power when the swithc is on so im asuming thats what a switched 12v source is?

Freeskier7791 04-01-16 02:23 PM

You could use the switch you already have to send power to the relay, switched 12v source usually refers to a wire that gets 12v sent to it when the key is turned to accessory or on. Do you understand how to wire the relay up?

Yes, that is what it is. It sounds like you are close to having it figured out. You could always post a picture of the painless kit you are using and the wires that run out of it. Take your old toggle switch and get it out of there, let the fan kit control when the fan kicks on and off like it is meant to do. Any manual switch in a system like that is just asking for trouble.

enrique1992 04-02-16 11:51 AM

i figured it out thanks to you guys. i put a heat gun to the temp probe while the switch wass on accesories and the fan fired up and i found out if you turn the knob all the way counter clock wise they stay on the whole time you have the switch in accesories.

KansasCityREPU 04-02-16 02:27 PM

So your switch has a knob? That might have been an important aspect to know when troubleshooting.

im thinking i dont need the switch because the fan turns of as soon as i turn the car key out of accesories

KansasCityREPU 04-02-16 04:39 PM

So is this Painless knob a way to set the temp at which the fan engages?

yes it works very well, not too hard to instal if i could doo it. i endedup finding the 12v source where you told me to bypass the fuel pump safety relay so i didint have to cut anithing

Freeskier7791 04-06-16 08:25 AM

glad you got it working
