External Oil Cooler

External Oil Cooler

well yesterday i brought my 1982 gsl into work and threw it up on the lift to do diff, tranny and engine oil, and i noticed that my undercarriage shield was dripping oil, upon removal i found that the oil cooler is leaking like a siv. this car to me is going to be about learning more about older technology and whenever i can adding some japanese modifications to a classic car. so i went onto amazon and sourced a tranny cooler that is 12x2x7 with AN fittings and 66" steel braided nylon hose, in hopes to delete my oem oil cooler and install an external cooler,
now, my concerns are that i am obviously lessening the capacity that the oem cooler has, and if that's a problem? i intend to take pictures and share how this endouver turns out, and would appreciate any problems or concerns you guys may think about, thanks!

you might want an oil temp gauge first, i bet the new cooler isn't good enough. the original cooler can be fixed, its usually the bung the fitting screws into that cracks, and it can be rewelded

Try to get one that's almost the same size as the original one.

Oil not only lubricates the eccentric shaft, but also flows into the rotors providing cooling.

Funny enough, CSF has made one with bosozoku styling in mind.

thankfully with those fittings i could upgrade the actual cooler itself if i feel it's not properly cooling, i'm going to try and install a temp gauge either today or tomorrow and see what temp the stock cooler sits at with my car, and monitor it from there

I would try and repair or replace your OEM oil cooler.

If it can't be fixed they are easy to find in the For Sale section for not much $$.

Most aftermarket oil coolers will be a fraction of the size of the OEM oil cooler. Not to mention, the OEM oil cooler is part of the fan shroud air flow which is important.

The OEM oil cooler is also equipped with a thermostat which helps to have your oil warm up faster, and in cold weather actually stay at a proper temperature.

I have heard that rotary cooling is 1/3 oil system. Thats why the OEM coolers are massive.

Thanks for posting the link to CSF - that cooler has -10 fittings that should bolt right up to the RacingBeat -10 stainless braid lines and would make for any easy retrofit. My -SE has a cracked bung that seldom leaks, but one of these days I may have to go to my spare. Good to know CSF has something similar for $339 that's at least available.

RX OIL COOLER

That's in NZD. So cheaper than it seems to you guys. Although won't have an oil thermostat. I think Mishimoto sell in line ones though

You could also do the common FC front mount oil cooler swap. They are readily available, have more oil capacity and a larger surface area for more air cooling. It's a simple swap on an FB, I've done it myself in the past and liked the results.

Hey, i also replaced my oem oil cooler with an external cooler on my 99’ Lancer gls last week, well it wasn’t leaking but it wasn't working well and it was getting overheat after five minutes of average speed driving. I watched some videos about how to check the fluid but this one helped me the most (https://transmissioncoolerguide.com/...mission-fluid/) and even after i checked the fluid the car was still gets hot so i had to replace it with an external cooler and now it runs perfectly !!

And this is related to RX7s how? Also, 3 year old thread. I know you are trying to get your thread count up but do it in the new members sections or post relevant information related to RX7s please.
