Exhaust Temp - can't find reference
Hey Guys,
I know it's common knowledge around here that rotary exhaust is hot as the fires of Hades (or Mordor, if you're a fantasy buff) but I went searching on the forum and on "the google" and couldn't find any reference to what it typically is.
Someone here has gotta be running an EGT gauge or have seen a reference in a manual or on a reliable website somewhere about what the ballpark Exhaust temp for a rotary is.
Specifically we're looking at ceramic coating the headers for a 12a and have some stuff available that's good to 1300F, but I seem to recall someone saying our temps were in around 1600-1800F and I wasn't sure... 'cause then I found rotor housing temps around 300F ...
Hell none of these numbers make sense to me 'cause they're all in F!
So come on guys, what have ya got? Let's figure out how hot rotary exhaust *really* is.
Jon

Anyone got a picture of their EGT gauge while running or have this in a manual somewhere?
Not that I don't trust ya doc, I'd just like to have something more concrete to give my coating guy other than "yeah, the guys on the forum said 1800ish"

Sam - Marc's FB made the trip down to Kitchener last weekend to start it's crazy transformation... that's why we're looking into exhaust coatings!
RPM Motorsports and Fearless Customs will be doing the work, should rock when it's done.
So yeah I definitely want to come and see your car some time. It's worth the trip down just for that!
After jacking my own thread.... still looking for info, lol.

I have been using EGT gauges since 1998.
Idle is around 800*F.
Peak temperature, after accelerating thru the gears at wide open throttle, then WOT in 4th gear for at least 1/2 mile, is 1650*F. Hotter = Leaner = BOOM.
The coatings are measureed in sustained temp and peak temp for x amount of time.
The common thing to do for ceramic coating the rotary header is JetHot 2000. I did that on the rx7and it has not come off. Engine bay temps are lower, made some more hp too. It was about $300 including two way shipping back in 1999.
The lower temp coatings cannot sustain 1400*F freeway driving.

When i asked in the race tech section I've been told it can reach 2000 also when raced hard with porting. I might do the ceramic coating sometime, but for now header wrap should do.
