exhaust restriction?
I can't figure this one out. I bought my GSL-SE two years ago, and got a major tune-up and all the fluids changed (synthetic in trans and diff), new fuel filter and air filter. Went out in the wide-open spaces and did a top-speed run.. got up to 100 mph and it wouldn't go any faster. I think Road & Track said a stock -SE can do about 120, so I was disappointed. The acceleration is great, I can easily redline it through the gears, and it'll cruise at 70 - 80 mph no problem.
I did another top-speed run the other day, and again it got up to about 100 and wouldn't go any faster. 1st through 4th gear is fine, but it's like there's a "rev limiter" in 5th gear! What could be limiting top speed?
It's basically stock - stock body, stock wheels, stock H-rated 205/60 x 14 tires, lightweight 16# flywheel (I love it!), CenterForce II clutch, and s/s brake lines for quick stops.
I know.. it's not important to go that fast.. I'm just puzzled.

I was able to push 122mph in a GSL, stock, correct tire aspect ratio, so I know it was right. No major tail wind, but a long, long streight of road. I know most sites say 115mph is what you'll get stock with it. YEah, I think a fuel restriction may be your problem.

I need to do a top speed test too... but there are no places around here to do that--there's only one place i can think of--the old run-down airport runway, but that road is all torn up and bumpy... I surely wouldn't want to go 90+ over those pot-holes and such

What's the approximate speed if you bury the needle past the marks in a 120 speedo? I'm only off by 2 mph at 55 and that was measured against a stock mitsi spyder my brother has so I could determine how bad my new Dunlop 225/50-15's would mess up the speedo. And, yes, I am crowing...

Just 'cos you measured it against a Mitsu doesn't mean anything, it could have been off too.
My '80 used to read precise, then it would read VERY inaccurate (about 10-15% too high!) They like to put those speed telltale trailers up (Your Speed is and with those I determined that it's 20mph per 1000rpm in 5th and 16mph per 1000 in 4th. So cruising down the road at 4500 in 4th, I'd know that the car was going 72mph, and shifting into 5th would put the revs right around 3600.
The '85 is different. 4th is the same, obviously because 4th gear is always 1:1 and the rear has the same gearing, and the tire size is the same, and sure enough the speedometer reads 16mph per 1000, so the speedo's accurate. But 5th gear is not 20mph per 1000, it's a bit shorter. The engine revs a little more for a given speed. But the books say an '85 should have taller gear! (less RPM!) HMmmm. Strange.
Oh but anyway I had the '80 when stock up to 5800 in 5th gear and it was still pulling a little. Modified it didn't seem to want to pull as hard at high speeds (???) but I'd regularly hit 90mph in a little over 15 seconds
