exhaust hanger alternative part

Hi Folks,

I have a broken exhaust hanger, HANGER, SILENCER 1114-40-1605

And a quick search yields a price of $40 for the OE part, which seems like... a lot. Before I start looking everywhere else, does anyone know of an alternative part?

A very quick search, "exhaust hanger" brought up a few choices. just scroll pictures, it is a bit easier. Keep your metal insert's if those are needed or present and measure your hanger.

I should have typed faster..... Thanks!

The difference between the oem hanger and the aftermarket hangers is that the oem hanger has the metal sleeves built into the hanger to support the mounting hardware for the muffler. Without using a hanger with the metal sleeves and correct bolt spacing, the hanger is likely to tear. I have tried using aftermarket hangers with no sleeves and they did not work and they tore. Yes the oem hanger is expensive, but its the hanger support for the muffler. It helps support the weight of the muffler and centers the muffler to the body at three points. The oem hanger is built to take the heat of the rotary exhaust and they last for 20 or more years.

You can try using using aftermarket hangers, but you will have to bore the mounting points out with a drill and use the metal sleeves from your original mufler hangers. Its worth a shot to save money. I'm just not sure if there are size differences between the two different hangers and I'm not sure how centered the muffler will be using the aftermarket hangers.

You can also buy some metal tubing at HomeDepot and cut them to the width and make your own sleeves for the aftermarket hangers. I did that and it works fine. You just need the sleeves so the bolts threds don't saw through the rubber.

If you are interested, i have a couple of old hangers with the metal insert. They are kind of hard, but not cracked or torn. You can have them if you want to pay for postage from San Diego area.

Places like the big box stores and ACE have a variety of metal sleeves that will work. I got mine at ACE.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and offers, great forum!

I've been busy with some more urgent repairs on other cars and need to put some proper effort into this. I'd like to find a part that's pretty close, available at AutoZone/NAPA etc. and transfer over the metal sleeves.

@Carl, would you mind just measuring the ones you've got so I know what the size is supposed to be? Overall dims and the centerline of the inserts? Mine's torn and stretched but the sleeves are okay.

Fortunately mine didn't completely fail, my temporary fix is encircling it with a hose clamp and tightening it back together. It works but won't last.

I used these and slid some metal sleeves in them. Take the old one into the store to make sure its long enough. I just measured mine and they look t be about 1.5 in and installed are stretch to about 1.75 in.

I have also used this as well instead in some places. I just cut up the rubber to fit the where needed.

Looks like mazdatrix has the hangers you need in stock. Not cheap but correct anyway.

I have a collection of bushings from hangers I've replaced over the years. PM me your address and I can send you a few.

PM sent, thanks so much!

@t_g_farrell thanks for the links. The Mazdatrix part is a bit more reasonable. In the expectation that my others will fail soon enough, I'm going to try modifying that part from Advance Auto ( or something similar) drilling and inserting the bushings as you and @mazdaverx713b suggested. I'll post back details.

I also measured one of my intact hangers and it looks like this, 3" x 1 1/2" x 3/4" thick, with 1 1/2" to the CL of the holes. @Carl thanks for that offer, I'll give this a go.

Yes. Those are the same dimensions. Sorry I didn't see your comment earlier. And you are still welcome to the two that I have.

I had to zip tie mine along with using a universal rubber hanger from the parts store as my muffler pipe kept hitting one of the rear links at bumps. I will be taking it to my local muffler shop to have them properly put everything on as the middle section also hangs very low. Previous owner put a new catalytic convertor but the shop he took it to did a very poor job with how low everything hangs from the exhaust manifold to the muffler.

Good Solution

Hi All, I got a package today from @Banzai, some of the exhaust hanger bushings - thanks so much!

On Amazon I found these hangers that seem to match size although slightly different design than OEM, just $2 each in 4 pack.

As various folks suggested make sure to keep your bushings from the old hangers. Installing them was easy, I lubed the hanger with a bit of PTFE spray and I could push them in with firm finger pressure.

Timely thread. I just looked at mine on the muffler section and they are starting to tear apart. Saw those same hangers on amazon. I guess a new project has been born.

Looks@Toruki !

Glad to hear that the Amazon hangers worked! The hangers look like they will work well. Keep us updated on how they hold up to the exhaust heat.

Banzai comes through again with being an awesome person and truly helping other people here on the forum! If Toruki didn't get the sleeves, he would have had a difficult time maintaining the longevity of the new hangers.

Just did a batch of hangers as all of mine are needing replacement. Got the rubber at Oreillys for $3.00 each and bought some steel tubing at the hardware store which I cut up to make the metal bushings. Original OEM hanger for comparison. Total costs ~$21.00 and an hour of work.

Nice work on making your own!! You'll have to let us know how they fit and perform as compared to the original Mazda hangers!

@Toruki I don't mean to thread jack here but Dave did ask me to post back.

I got them all replaced on the back half of the exhaust and muffler. Bought some new hardware for most of it because they are a bit thicker. I also try to mimic the installation from OEM where there are metal hangers on the lower part of the mounts for the muffler at the mid point and the rear mounts. Came out pretty clean and the muffler is hanging correct and not hitting the lower valence.

Rear mounts from below.

The longer bolts I needed to do this. I also got some lock nuts and washers as well. These are m8 x 1.25 which is the OEM thread for the mounts.

I did ask you to post back. I think the hangers you used look great and will work perfectly. This thread will help others in the future who are searching for an alternate part for their exhaust hanger. I think this is a very cost friendly alternative to the oem part that will definitely hold up and work well at a fraction of the price!

Thanks guys. I also wanted to post the pics because I couldn't find any real pics of the mounts for the SA anywhere.

One of t he things I noticed as I was doing this was that there are metal extensions used in the OEM setup. I didn't have those but just bent up some metal I had and made do. I think these were done to keep the rubber as far from the hot exhaust components as possible. I think you can get these same shaped hangers in poly at different hardness which may hold up better but would be a pain during the install.
